it is not strictly needed add the alpha layer for merging, somehow gimp do its magic and merge well the layer also if there is not an alpha channel

Layer/New from visible
OR Edit/copy VISIBLE + Edit/paste as/new image

that allow to save the result but also to go back to experiment with other modes o

http://www.mehdiplugins.com/english/weaver.htm This doesn't actually make plaid but it has a nice effect. I've used it quite a few times over the years.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone comes up with a preview style plaid maker filter. Probably Python.

Actually isn't there a tartan creator scm filter?

There is a plaid maker (under patterns) from an image in Gmic now (probably wasn't in 2011)
