After cutting and pasting to use my joined-up text filter results with my metallic text filters for creating the text for large captions, I decided to make life easier for myself and alter the script to work on layers and selections as well as by entering text. The filter can be downloaded here to unzip and add to your plugins folder...



The filter will appear under the Filters menu:

Filters>>TextFX>>Metallic Texts

The filter will work, as it did originally, by entering some text into the box on the dialog, but only when you select or create an empty layer.

I have removed the Roundedness option in this version and replaced it with a Randomise surface sheen option. I have also added a Constrain text selection option to use with text created along a path (especially along a circle, spiral or complicated path) to hopefully produce more acceptable, less blurred results. Set the option to 1 to for this.



The filter will also create a metallic effect layer from a selection or another layer - useful for making shapes. An example file showing text entered from the dialog, text used by the filter non text layer that had been cut and pasted and some shapes that were created from a selection:

There is a problem with the scrolling interface!

The problem with scrolling dialog boxes in python plugins has been around forever. It is a problem with the Gimp itself and has caused a certain amount of heat in the past. Jazzon has provided a replacement version of gimpfu (the python plugin interface) and instructions for installing it. The replacement works really well.

I've viewed some of your work - so I guess you'll soon surpass my achievements.

To get you started (if you need any tips, that is) here are the steps needed to make a cut roundel or circle.

Create a new image and on an empty layer:

Use the ellipse tool to make a circular selection (fig. 1) [Mine 300x300 px)

Feather the selection with Select>>Feather... [Mine at 25 px]

Fill the selection with your foreground colour with Edit>>Fill with Foreground Colour (fig. 2) [My colour was black - obviously]

Use the rectangle select tool to make a selection over the filled circle

Feather this selection with Select>>Feather... [Mine at 25 px]

Cut out this area of the circle with Edit>>Cut (or Ctrl + X) (fig. 3)

Call up the Metallic Text filter dialog with Filters>>Text FX>>Metallic Texts...

Set the following options with these values to copy my settings:

Text Style = Shiny Metal

Metal colour = Copper

Bevel Size = 25

Add a Drop Shadow = Yes

Click OK to proceed. (Fig. 4)
