To give you an idea of the slowness, I generated the below image setting W+H = 1600 (max) and nr.of areas = 15 (max).
Elapsed time on my PC (Intel I-5, 8GB RAM): 9 minutes !!!

Very nice outcomes!
Thanks also for your patience in getting the results, but there are good news: I'm preparing a much faster edition where you can choose large output dimensions and greater number of colour areas without severely impacting on the performances.
I hope to post this new version tomorrow, I'm in test.

The new faster edition is ready, here it is.
An example about the improvement of the performances:
- using W+H = 1600 and nr.of areas = 15 previous edition took 9 minutes
- ... current edition takes 20 seconds
The filter is no more sensible to the dimensions of the output image.
Still sensible to the number of areas (it takes a bit more than 1 second for each colour area on my PC).

Because of the much better performances the defaults parameters are now:
- output dimension 4500
- number of colour areas 15

It has been added also the possibility to flatten or not the final outcome, so the user may play with modes and opacities.

Couldn't recognize the image file format for file 'C:\Users\Utilisateur\.gimp-2.8\patterns\Canvas-Covered.xcf'

No idea.
Does it happen every time you use this filter?
Do you get anyhow the outcome?

PS: the filter creates a pattern, but it's called "MultiColouredParticles.pat" and is stored (in your case) under:
'C:\Users\Utilisateur\.gimp-2.8\patterns\". Can you find it?
