I was playing around with various Gmic filters and stumbled onto something interesting. I used "Local Orientation" filter on a duplicate layer and played with blending modes. I think it looks interesting on this shot anyway...

Wish someone would port the "Laplacian Pyramid Filter" to gimp. It is just an outstanding filter with lots of range...

I like that effect racer-x.

Maybe you will like G'MIC>Testing>Naggobot>Dodge sketch (with color on)
Image

You can combine layers with more color with the result from "Dodge sketch" filter.

Also there is Iain Fergussons "Pyramid processing" filter: G'MIC>Testing>Iain fergusson>Pyramid processing
That filter does't process contrast, gamma satuaration etcetera (as in the filter you described above, from Michael Vinther http://meesoft.logicnet.dk/ ), so you have to do that kind of filtering after or before the editing with the "Pyramid processing" filter.

And there is the "Tone enhance" filter: G'MIC>Details>Tone enhance (by Garagecoder)

You can get much color with the "DCP dehaze" filter: G'MIC>Details>DCP dehaze
Image

After that you can smooth the result with a smoothing/blurring filter you prefer.

Little playing here:

The "Dodge sketch" filter gives a too much metal/emboss effect.

Easier:

- Use the G'MIC "Pyramid processing" filter
- Duplicate layer
- Set Layer/blending mode to "burn" or "multiply"
- Use opacity slider

- Repeat this process if necessary

- Amplify this result with G'MIC "Tone enhance" filter

- Smooth

I'm also curious. So if you find a solution with GIMP and G'MIC, please let us know.

But you can always use "ShellOut" of course. ;)

Thanks for the tip on the "Pyramid processing" filter. I never tried it before, but it works OK. I saved it in my FAVs section along with other filters I like. I'm sure I'll use it now and then to bring out shadow detail.
