how was this picture edited from it's original state? how do I do this type of thing with GIMP? I am going to take a picture of someone and edit it like this picture was. any thoughts? thanks

I don't know what the original photo looked like, but if it was full color I'm guessing that the blue and most of the green tones were desaturated, as well as enough of the reds to make it look almost but not entirely lacking in color. If that makes any sense

It will be a while until I get the picture. for now I just need more ideas on how the pic was edited and simple ways to edit a picture so it's like the angelina pic. maybe something that takes a bit of detail out without making it blurry? hopefully there will be one single thing I can change about my picture.

Looks like color correction (colorize and desaturate, but not completely) and a filter to add some noise to me.
I know how to do the first part, the filter, no idea.

There are many filters and scripts that do duotone filtering, among other things. The best place to start would be at the Registry - http://registry.gimp.org/

You could try the following:
1. run the National Geographic script (http://registry.gimp.org/node/9592)
2. Flatten - Desaturate
3. Use color balance - increase red to + 20 and blue to -20 or thereabouts (for mid-tones)

I agree with this. Basically, run "Colors->Colorize..." with a Hue setting of about "35" and a Saturation setting of around "30".

To add grain to the picture, create a new white layer and perform a "Filters->RGB Noise" with all sliders at about "50". Set the new layer's Layer Mode to "Grain Merge" and lower its Opacity to suit (typically a very low value around "15" or so).

Looks a bit like sepia coloring to me.
