Gimp quilting

Mom likes to do quilting when she has time and we had talked about designing quilt projects so to speak on the computor. The lovely plaid request by Akky and tutorial by Mahvin got me going on this idea again. Since it is wet and rainy here I decided to work on applying some applique pictures I found and fix them up to work on gimp either as a brush or image I could use. Here is my first real attempt at GIMP quilting. :paint

Thanks Lyle. I think it did not turn out too bad either.

I made another quilt patch not as fancy but just getting the hang of this and can expand later. Now I need to take the quilt patterns like the 'log cabin' ,etc and make them into a black, white, grey image so I can change the blocks.

I have a halloween cat image I want to make a pumpkin one now.

Beautiful appliqué work and nice plaids Liana. I know there are quilt patterns available out there. Bet they wouldn't be hard to do on the computer.

Here's just one I found that would work for appliqué. There are many piecing patterns out there too.

Very nice work. My wife loves to quilt, i design quilt blocks but i use a CAD program. This looks like it will be more fun.

The funny part is I can't sew at all in real life. I tried was scary. :oops:

It looks better in GIMP for me. :rofl

I saved your pattern O I will play with it this evening. I worked on some more patterns last night. I had a line drawing of a pumpkin I found so I tried to fix it up. I have some others but the edges are rough on them. I will post them tonight maybe someone better than me can clean them up a bit and teach me how.

@ Ofnuts. Official Gimp wear.. :rofl

A Gimp gathering would be cool everyone is so nice on here. Maybe at my farm lots of room if no one minds the great outdoors. :hehe

I've been wanting to share an old PSP tutorial (converted for GIMP) with this thread because it relates, and I absolutely love the way the quilted text looks. It's fairly simple, but my first entry didn't seem to generate any responses, so I re-did the example. Here are two images to compare to:

I'm still working on making the fabric look more draped. This is a combo of solid noise, whirl and pinch, and displacement. I had to enlarge the canvas around the plaid fabric, then make a layer with solid noise that was larger so I'd get the irregularity of the edges of the plaid.

I used a displacement of 10 for both x and y, but I think even less would look better. Maybe a little more whirl and pinch.

You will need to wait a bit for the animation to load. It's to show the various layers I used to make the draping.

Thanks, mahvin. I'm still playing with it. I have what I want it to look like in mind but it's not coming out that way. What would be really cool is to be able to put stitching on it and have slight wrinkling extend out from the stitching like on a real quilt.
