Who is tracing there family history here and where do you come from?

I have recently become interested again. Always thought my furtherest (is that even a word) ancestors were german. Lehmann's did come from Germany to Australia but I have found 3 families even further back that were born in Switzerland. Today I found an 8th generation direct ancestor from 1660

I have sent away to ask if there is a family crest there. Will post it if I find it.

Not really interested. My roots are Portuguese (80%) with a little Spanish (15%) and French (5%) mixed in...

It's not what you come from, it's what you are now that's important...

I had a cousin who did a lot of genealogy and it's interesting to see your genetic history.

:) I wasn't either until a couple years ago, did a little and have picked it up again now.
Not looking to see if I was in a famous line etc. Just interested to see where it goes.

I've been working on my daughter's family history for the last couple of years now. I say it's for my daughter, so I have an excuse to trace her dad's family, but she's not particularly interested. Really, it's for me.

My dad's family were Russian Jews, who came to the US in the early 1900s. That's all I know about them.

My maternal grandmother was German. Her parents came to the US from Germany in the 1860s.

My maternal grandfather was French-Canadian. Most of his forebears came to Canada from France in the 17th century. Finding out about that part of the family has really been fun.

My partner's family is interesting, too. Some were German immigrants. Others came from England, then to Canada after the US Revolutionary war.

It's been fun discovering of history I never knew before. Mostly, I use GIMP to restore old family photos.

Is exciting when you find out something new too. I guess mine now will be for my children later.

If you are creating a book/blog for your FH project you could always generate a custom font taken from a collage of old images for the title letters...

Sometimes it's difficult to choose witch branch of the family you will follow.
The further you go the more ancestors you have. As far as I know both sides of the family, mother and father, have native relatives.
One family tree, on my mother mothers side, goes back to 1590. I find it interesting.

However can understand Racer-X that it's most important who you are today. But I mean that much has to do where you came from also.

Skinnyhouse, that's a very original concept. I never made a custom fond. And making the photo collage is a project on his own.

Never heard of that either Skinnyhouse. Unfortunately I don't have any photos. except a couple of headstones.
Ella, I decided to do my father's line mostly but have found some on the other lines - maternal etc that go back just as far. My main reason for sticking to my fathers line mostly is It is my name again now. Another reason was I never met my grandfather. Found out he died 8 years before I was born.
Found out that on my grandmother's line (My father's mother) there was a convict from England in the past (female).

You are right Sallyanne, your own name is most interesting. But on my fathers side I got stuck in the early years 1800.
I had the luck to know 3 of my 4 grandparents. They told me a lot about their histories, fascinating!
As far as I know no convict in the past. But you never know for sure...

I only found out by looking at the 'profile' of a person in my tree.

I tried using Ancestry.com to find out where I came from. Apparently, my paternal family came from outer space... there's no history at all past my great-grandfather. My maternal family claims to have come over on the Mayflower.

But according to the Ancestry.com DNA test thingy I got this past Yule I am the whitest whitey that ever whited.

Great, great grandfather came here from Scotland. I'm from the Gunn clan. Can trace back to the vikings, via the name Gunn, which comes from Gunni, grandson of Sweyn Asleifsson, the so-called Ultimate Viking.

This is the family crest they sold my Dad back in the 80s (book and crest supposedly about my family's name; around $40 or $50 as I recall which is a ripoff; lol). The wooden plaque (crest) still hangs on the wall in the foyer. :)

Just a little bit of history:
My ancestry and mostly very Hispanics are from Spain. I'm Puerto Rican and the Island that I was born (Puerto Rico) was discovered way before USA was discovered. Puerto Rico was colonized before USA and Canada. I USA they celebrate Columbus day even though he never set foot or discover this country. Another Merchant and explorer by the name of Amerigo Vespucci was the one who discover the big Americas. That is why the named all the Americas to honor his name. So after all that been said, we latinos were in this parts first. :hehe

Oh, you think the gimpanzee represents prehistoric state of my avatar image. That's funny :hehe
I shaped the ears to gimme some vulcan credibility.

Not really interested in family genealogy, don't have any personal records either.
But I could dig if I wanted, we have great public registers of various statistics and data.
Reminds me of school buddy who had a thick worn book, his elders had started a family tree centuries ago,
like dark medieval times. Pretty cool.
I have some Swedish roots, and some eastern blood cause my grandma was from Russian borders.
Always been more interested in the big picture, how human race spread in the early days and populated earth.
The cave man times must have been awesome, when fire was invented etc. Do like to watch history documentaries.
In upper school I thought half-seriously about philology and linguistics, but ended up in graphics line.
