Hi, folks. This is a FYI regarding some issues I encountered while updating My Win7/64 bit machine from GIMP 2.8.XX to GIMP 2.10.2:

1. My initial install download came from GIMP home page. This install was disfunctional/incomplete. I had to uninstall and try again using the Partha download . This install worked as expected, but not without its own issues (read on).

2. Most, if not all tool/function icon PNGs were not visible (only represented by tiny dots). Changing to the Legacy theme and adjusting the icon size in Preferences-->Icon Theme-->Custom icon size and changing to Medium fixed some of the icon issues; but a third of the icons were still MIA. I came across a forum where someone else had the same problem. The solution was a custom theme based on the Legacy theme, but with the missing icons included. (Large amounts of appreciation for that guy's efforts to solve the problem). I installed his custom theme and the entire missing icon issue went away. I don't think the icon PNGs were missing, but that GIMP simply didn't know where to find them.

3. G'mic threw an error everytime I booted up GIMP 2.10. I had to manually delete all G'mic files from the GIMP 2.8 folders on my HD to get it to stop throwing the error. I had manually installed G'mic from the Plugin Registry for use in Gimp 2.8. Being that G'mic is now included in 2.10 as standard, I suspect my manual install was somehow conflicting with the new version. Once I removed my old G'mic files the error went away and the plugin now works as expected in 2.10.

4. The Help feature kept triggering a response from my Norton Auto Firewall, preventing access to the online Help from within GIMP. I had to allow permission for access, which solved the issue. The Help menu features now work as expected.

For me, getting Gimp 2.10.2 up and running and stable was a bit of a nail-biter, as I am a photographer not an IT guy. I am very pleased, though, with the new features included with this update. I am particularly grateful for the inclusion of the NIK collection of plugins as standard, as I have been using them extensively, via the ShellOut plugin.

Best regards,
Nikon Guy

Update:
I have decided to uninstall GIMP 2.10.2 and re-install GIMP 2.8.22 because there were too many negative impacts on my system from the new version (see my post here). I will give it 6-12 months for things to stabilize and see where things are at that point.

I'm still using GIMP 2.8.18 and won't "upgrade" any time soon.
Everything within my current GIMP works as expected.
Therefore,
I see no urgency for me to install 2.10.
