How can I do it? I know it can be done copying image and layers and all that, but is it possible in a single image?

You might have the wrong idea about quickmask. It is just a method to make/modify a selection.

However, Quickmask toggled ON. Paint in white to select the background: https://i.imgur.com/x8mf2Kt.jpg
Toggle quickmask OFF leaving active selection, then Edit -> Cut removes the background, or if you want the other way around invert the selection.

But then painting on a layer mask instead shows you in real-time what you will get..
