Windows 10 October 1809 Update [SAFE]

If anyone isn't aware of this.
Microsoft has pulled the plug on the October 1809 update,
until further notice.

However,
for me it's too late,
because I installed the update manually 3 days ago.
Surprisingly,
everything seems to be working okay.

One other thing I've done.
Was to move all my User Library Folders to a different physical drive.
Therefore,
I didn't lose any data,
as was described/reported.
Also,
I haven't experienced any of the unusual CPU usage,
that has also been reported.

I have backups of my previous Windows installation.
So if need be,
I can do a system image restoration.

Yet another reason to backup, backup, backup all personal data. I'm glad I'm not using Windows though.....

Yes, even Linux is not immune to problems. I had a much needed file in a .7z which required a password to open. All well and good until I updated my Compression Utility and the new version couldn't recognize the old version's .7z file. I was quite pissed to say the least. Luckily I had and older version in a VM, so I fired up the VM and extracted the much needed file. Now I keep a copy in a Veracrypt virtual drive, along with a hard copy.

Better safe than sorry...

Always useful to keep a copy of PeaZip handy. Use the portable version.

However, there was an early general warning about the update and MS withdrew it yesterday.

Peazip works great, thanks rich2005. Apparently the new version of Archive Manager doesn't support encryption anymore. No idea why they went that way.

My bet is they will figure what's going on and release the update once folk get 2nd Tuesday's updates in a few days, Wallace. Yeah; I've read an article or two and saw Linus's video on this one already.

I also updated and so far, everything is working as it should. Nothing was lost. I follow Microsoft on Twitter and they didn't say anything about pulling the plug on the October update. I installed the update on 10/2/2018.

The Oct 1809 update,
has indeed been pulled form Microsoft's Windows 10 Update Catalog.

If you updated to 1809,
without any issues.
Much like what I've experienced.
You should be alright.

With that being said.
I do have backups available to me,
if I need to reinstall 1803.

However,
there seems to have been many people,
that were effected by the 1809 update.
The report says,
that millions of people have had issues,
with loss of data and unusual CPU usage.

Why some people weren't experiencing these issues,
is still to be determined,
or perhaps we may never know why this was the case.

I haven't made a back up of my system yet, but I will. I just need to buy some blank DVDs. I don't think we will ever know why Microsoft keeping screwing up.

Wallace, don't you think it could be interesting to make a statistic among the gimp-chatters to know:
- how many did update without losing any piece of data
- how many encountered problems

(BTW, about the last point from a source I don't remember I got the info that the problems were caused by insufficient space in the system)

I would be interested in knowing this.

In regard to the "insufficient space",
that you mentioned.

I haven't come across any source,
that states this as a possible issues related to loss of data.

When installing Windows.
If there isn't enough space,
for the installation files on the target drive.
It won't install,
or it may gives an error message/notification of "insufficient space".

That is to say that the drive needs to be,
or have enough space.
In order for the OS to be installed.
Otherwise it can't install.

Windows 10 install,
minimum hardware requirements...

Yes and it's my understanding as well,
that Microsoft has fixed this issue.

I am now experiencing sound issues with Windows 1809. I updated it today and now I hear nothing.
