Hello David and all the team.
This is about the new stylize process.
Is it possible to stop the process before the end of the 5th phase. For example by hitting the space bar or another key ? It would be nice to have the result in the layer at the moment the user hit the key. I made many tests and generally I would like to stop before the end. It could avoid blur, structure change and color issue.
Hope you'll see that and ...
Bonnes fêtes :)

I assume you experimented with the five parameters of "Fidelity...".
I did a few tries, the results look different increasing Fidelity and reducing Smoothness.
I didn't continue because the filter (as the author says) is veeeery sloooow, even using images of small sizes.
If you have a lot of time or a super computer (or both), you may give some try to see whether you succeed in getting less blur anyhow (also before David implements your request, if he agrees..).

I've tried on tiny pictures with low fidelity parameter. It's usefull to have an idea of the result. But I think it would be the best to have an instant stop. So let's be patient, G'MIC became a must have for dreamers :)

I notice this filter runs much faster in Linux vs Windows. Using the same 1920x1080 images, it takes about 2 min in Linux and 20 min in Windows. I'm running the Windows version in a VM using Pain.net plugin, that may or may not have an effect on performance.

very interesting Racer-X ! In my windows 10 it takes about 17 mn for 1920*1080. It's an old Core I7. What linux do you use ?

I wonder if g'mic just runs better in paint.net, Racer. Maybe someone at pixls may bud in on this. :)

I'm running Linux Mint Cinnamon 19, which is based on Ubunto 18.04. I'm running it in an I7-4790 CPU @ 3.60 GHZ x 4 cores.

For the sake of comparison. I'll upload images I used. It rendered in 1 min 16 sec. I used default settings.

Hope you don't mind, racer-x; I posted your observation at pixls thread for stylize. Maybe David can figure out why paint.net's 10 times faster and implement that update to G'MIC for GIMP. :)

@racer-x Thank you for your response. I tried Linux Mint 2 years ago. It worked very well even with an old PC. May be I should add a dual boot to use it again... Your try with photocomic's pattern is cool. :)

That was done in Linux using Gimp, not windows using paint.net. Paint.net is easily 10 times slower. I assume it's because of Windows? Can anyone confirm by posting their time to render using the images I posted?

One way images can render many times faster is by using the 'OpenCL' option which is available in Gimp 2.10.x
You need an OpenCL-capable graphics card (more ram the better) and it does not actually use the CPU for rendering.
People who are rendering 3D fractals know all about OCL. It cuts rendering time by at least 50%, sometimes a lot more.

I havn't had a chance to test Gimp OCL yet because I'm mostly still using 2.8.x. I did an 8 hour render a few days ago using OCL on Mandelbulber2.

Yeah; David corrected me at the pixls thread. Almost makes me want to beef up my LUbuntu 64-bit virtual machine to see. lol

Not using Open-CL, don't have a compatible graphics card. This was all CPU only. I guess it's just one more reason Linux is superior to Windows. :hehe

Don't know about superior, racer-x. Highly likely it's a compiler issue and David requested some of the compiler gurus to look at this; time will tell if the issue can be found out. Had a similar issue a while back and David found the issue and patched it. Hope the same happens with Stylize. :)

Linux is superior enough that I will never go back to Windows....

Here is an interesting one, I made the style layer using a lightning brush.

I tried to install linux Mint on a small HDD. I found Gimp 2.8 pre-installed and used a PPA to get the GMIC plugin. I did not read carefully all the procedure. So it installed gimp 2.10 and gmic 2.41. 2.41 does not include stylize :(
So now what can I do ? Gmic 2.43 package for Gimp 2.10 works for Debian but No package for Ubuntu. 2.43 Ubuntu package is for gimp 2.8 . The name of the plugin files are different.

The G'mic-Gimp ppa is only at 2.4.1 at the moment. You can uninstall the ppa and install the G'mic DEB file instead. this will give you the current G'mic 2.4.3 version.

Or go the simple route and use the latest AppImage (which includes G'mic 2.4.3): https://github.com/aferrero2707/gimp-appimage/releases/download/continuous/GIMP_AppImage-git-2.10.9-withplugins-20181227-x86_64.AppImage

@racer-x Thank you for your solution ! The appimage works well. But it's still impossible to use stylize with the models. The program doesn't load distant pictures via http. Not a problem, it works with top layer.
I unistalled GMIC 2.41 package, but the system Gdebi doesn't allows the installation of the 2.43. The message is "a latest version is already installed". Hope a fix will be done. Thanks again for your help !

Use Synaptic Package Manager and completely remove "gimp-gmic" and "gmic". Now install the .deb file. It will complain that a newer one is available, disregard the warning and install.
