Just so everyone knows, I tried Gimp 2.6.9 last night and it messed up the menus in Gimp, My gimp themes doesn't work right and even after I removed it and went back to 2.6.8 it's still not right. All of the menu buttons are blank until I hover over them and the menus are.... I can't quite explain it, bigger, maybe, certainly the theme I had isn't in effect anymore. I can't say if this will happen to other people or not.

Thanks for the heads up. It's a beta, or unstable version, isn't it? I will stick to my 2.6.4 until the 2.8 is out as a stable version!!!

That happens with every update. You have to uninstall the gimp themes and install them again.

i think Jolie is right, but im okay with Gimp 2.6.8, and btw.. whats new in gimp 2.6.9 ??

I think there's nothing new. Mostly bug fixes from what I understand.

I saw some minor changes to the filters window, I think it can apply an effect to multiple layers but I didn't try it so so I can't be sure.
As was mentioned above, I think it was mainly fixes.

I've been using 2.6.8 pretty smoothly, although last week it got something wrong and simply would NOT start. I tried uninstalling it, removing every trace of it n the registry and completely copying all of the Gimp folders and registry keys to the affected computer and it still crashed. I finally had to do a completely clean reinstall of windows and everything else on my laptop. It took me half a day to get everything back the way I like it. What scares me is that I still don't know what caused it or how to fix it the next time. The only clue I have was that some fonts were showing on the font list that i had removed weeks and and when I added new ones it died. Having spent 35 years diagnosing and solving problems I get trippy when things happen that I can't figure out.

I hate to admit it, but I wouldn't even know how to do any of that!

Well, knowing how to do it didn't help me out so it was worthless knowledge in this case.

Amendment to my last post,
I had just reinstalled everything on my laptop last week due to that problem with gimp. This afternoon it did the same thing, same error, I don't remember the wording but it involved libcairo-2.dll not loading. I was really bumbed out and decided that I wouldn't reinstall everything on a computer every week for one program no matter how good it was. But then I backtracked what I was doing and in both cases I had been deleting some fonts. So on a wild guess I copied everything in my font folder on my other computer and pasted it into my laptop fonts folder then reinstalled Gimp. It worked perfectly, I didn't even lose any of my configuration in gimp. The Point is that if anybody has this problem with libcairo-2.dll a potential fix rather than a complete reformat and reinstall it is to either keep a backup of your fonts folder now while it works then copy it back when needed or copy the fonts folder from a computer that works with Gimp on it. This might save a days work for someone.

yes, most of the bug fixes will be implemented in 2.8 i'm pretty sure.
there was also another critical bug that would crash 2.6.9 when you used any scroll bar in a tool selection.

You could mouse wheel and choose or directly select, but if you clicked an up or down arrow on the scroll bar it would crash the program.
this bug has since been resolved, but not yet implemented in 2.6.9
2.6.9 is supposed to be a stable version, but one of the bug fixes for open menus i believe caused lots of problems with the selection boxes.
i am currently using 2.6.8, 2.6.9, and 2.7 all installed on my Windows XP platform with very little problems so far.
i still have the bug with the selection boxes in 2.6.9 but you can work around that by using the mouse wheel to select.
the email i received from bug-zilla stated to look for an updated version after the new bundle is reviewed.

After reading your post I checked and 2.6.9 crashed just as you said it would so i removed it and went back to 2.6.8. All seems to be well now. i have to switch it on my laptop now and opefully this whole matter should be resolved

you can sign up for bugzilla and gimp emails, and youll get emails when new bugs are fixed and new bundles are out, including dl links for those bundles.
much easier than checking the gimp.org site and looking for the dl links.

I have gone back to Gimp 2.6.8 after 3 days of 2.6.9 (windows XP )

My problem is that the TEXT tool (Capital A in Toolbox) appears to have a problem on my computer. When I click on a font and try to use the slider to select other fonts , the slider interface dissappears. And I am stuck with one font. The same does not happen if I use the Freetext plugin in Filters where I can select different fonts. I have tried playing with the font library in preferences . Previously if I deleted all fonts Gimp took the windows Font library.
Going back to 2.6.8 the problem is gone. I then retried 2.6.9 and the problem reappeared . I am back on 2.6.8 and there is no problem.

Note that this may be due to other causes and I have not looked at upgrading GTK yet, I also think that the Gimprc file stays the same in upgrades but again I have not looked at this. Unfortunately I do not enough about GTK or how to debug windows except for basic stuff to take this much further.

If any of you are running Gimp 2.6.9 for windows XP could you see if the text tool works correctly so that I may determine whether there is a Gimp problem or whether I have a Windows / compatibility/ Gimp problem on my machine only.
I think this may be another display of the scroll problem mentioned before

the text tool worked fine for me also, just the combo boxes i had problems with.
i now only use 2.6.8 and 2.7.1 =)
both run great on Windows XP

2.6.9 seems to have a nasty bug when scrolling...scroll may crash gimp

Only 1 bug vs many other fixed but maybe sufficently nasty to suggest to stick with 2.6.8
