Good morning! I am needing some help with one of my images. I have a png image of the world map. I need to fill the entire image with a different color. And on a separate one, I need to fill the entire image with a pattern. I don't know how to fill in all of the tiny little islands on the map without having to click on each one. It would take hours. Also, I know how to do it with the paths tool. but on an image such as the world map, there are thousands of dips and curves, and if I don't get it perfect, the map will be ruined. Is there any way I can just select the clipart and fill the whole thing without drawing around it with the paths or laso? I am at a loss, and I see so many maps with different designs in them all the time, I know there has to be a way to do this!!
Thanks in advance!!

Good morning.
This is relatively...no it's actually very easy thing to do.
What you need, is either a big 2-colored world map, or a vector map.
There's a world map in wikipedia. SVG is the native vector format of Inkscape, and you can open/export the SVG paths into Gimp.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File ... orders.svg

Download the svg. Make sure to download as .svg, not .png!
In Firefox it can be done by clicking the image and when it opens in browser, right-click the image and use "save page as".
Open in Gimp, in the export window tick both boxes, import paths, and merge paths.

Switch to paths, right-click the path, "path to selection". Create new layer and fill.

If you wouldn't have a ready vector, a big 2-color .jpg or .png would require just a small additional step.
Menu: Select/By color, click the land color. Select/To path...and so forth.

With .png you could also use Layer Effects: Color overlay to change the color, or pattern overlay to overlay the land with pattern, but this requires additional plug-in.
A ready vector will always be more handy and accurate.

Let me know how it goes, or if you need more help.

You are awesome to have worked this all up for me to see! Very kind of you, I appreciate it! I now realize I should have mentioned the image I am working with is a .png. Actually like 99% of my clipart is png. I could download the map as an svg and use it this once....but I want to be able to fill any of my clipart images when I need to, and they are png as well. So I am looking for a way to do it with those. You mentioned a plug in? I have never installed one with gimp. Are they relatively easy to use? And where do you find it? Thank you so much for all of yyour help!

Although Nidhogg solution's is probably best in this case, the usual solution is to use Color>Color2alpha to make the color you want to replace transparent, and then insert a new layer under that and bucket-fill with the proper color or pattern (so that it shows through the "holes" in the top layer).

Yep, I agree with Ofnuts if new background color is wanted that works.
Don't use it much so I can't say how constant the color must be, to avoid leftover pixels.
I was thinking about the terrain color in my mini-tut. And I usually search for the best source files from web when possible, just a habit from RL work.

JulesB, I attached the Layer Effects plug-in for you (due to gimpscrits.com being dead it's harder to find) if you want to test switching the png color with it.
Extract the .zip and put it in the plug-ins folder.
Username/.gimp2.8/plug-ins.
I have done a small change, the original menu entry was a submenu under Layer. My edit is located in top menu "Layer FX" for faster access.

Note that this works only if, and after your png has transparency.

Open the .png. Menu: LayerFX/Color Overlay. Then just select the color, and hit OK. Using merge is optional.
Create new layer below the land/terrain layer and fill with bucket tool.
