Given the difficult times we face right now, it can often be instructive to look at older, different civilisations and their approach to life and the land.

Here are a couple showing the spirits of the indigenous Australians, one is my version of "Keeper Of The Lands" by Rex Sultan Jabangardi and the other is Wandjina, the supreme spirit of the Kimberley area of north west Australia.

I just read this for his work "Fire Dreaming":
Fire Dreaming is an important Dreamtime story as the Earth’s natural elements hold a great spiritual significance to Indigenous peoples in Central Desert Australia. It is believed that the fire passing through the bush is a sign of new life about to emerge.

Oldmangrumpy, your creation is beautiful and meaningful.
Everyone sees his own values in it depending on the current circumstances and corresponding emotions.
What I see in it is a girl waiting patiently and serenely on her safe island, surrounded by protective Sirens.
The water is calm despite the storm under need it. It emits a peaceful tranquillity.
Everything is going to be all right.

The Wagyl is the Noongar people's manifestation of the Rainbow Serpent in Australian Aboriginal mythology, from the indigenous culture based in the south-west of Western Australia. It was delegated to protect the rivers, lakes, springs and the wildlife.

The indigenous peoples of northern Australia have an explanation of why there is night and day. They say the Sun is the light from a torch made from the stringy bark tree that is carried by the Sun Woman, Wuriunpranilli. When she wakes each morning she makes a small fire, this is the dawn glow on the horizon. She then travels across the sky from east to west carrying her blazing torch.

I had problems finding any appropriate images to use as a base, so I just made up my own story picture. Inside the dream time cave in Kakadu, the spirit moon is about to enter its cave and the sun spirit is rising from its nocturnal cave; Wuriunpranilli has already lit her torch and is about to start her journey across the skies.

In the absence of any character images for this spirit, I took the liberty of creating a Gwion Gwion style figure based on the historic Kimberley rock art.

Isolation and experimentation go together with Gimp; so -

1. Draw 2 sets of simple paths
2. Use Ofnuts path generator plug-in to to create many paths between each of the original sets
3. Merge the visible paths from each set
4. Stroke resulting merged paths using the fade-to-fade dynamic
5. Apply Filters>distorts>whirl and pinch to each stroked layer

… and if you are lucky the shape of a bird will appear on your canvas
