In this case the original image was so well enlightened, that the standard outcome did not need any further play with the top mask.

For this image (still from Deviant Art) I used the "gray-copy" type of mask and set the layer mode to screen with dft opacity 50.

Used gray-copy type of mask and painted with light gray over the skin area

Note: deliberately left visibility of the strokes on the face, only smoothed (my taste)

I like it a lot and sure will spend many many hours playing with it.
And test different figures. Didn't change much on this first, just a quick tweak with the opacity sliders.

On this I changed the layer mode on the contours and -lines of engrave layers.

Two pretty dark outcomes (sources: D.A.)

I guess Issabella would have brightened them. but IMO they have their own fascination
