I have updated Metallic TextFX and Translucent TextFX filters to work with Gimp 2.10. and put them both into this zipped folder.

I have removed the trouble-some colour selector tools from both filters and they now use the currently selected foreground and/or background colours instead.

Both filters have long dialogs that require a solution to scrolling down to the bottom. Help may be found here (Post 8 for Gimp 2.10):

The Metallic TextFx Filter performs exactly as in version 1.03. To create metallic effect text make sure that the current active layer is an empty, transparent layer. If the layer contains any non-transparent pixels the filter will attempt to give whatever is there a metallic treatment - not a particularly good look for a whole filled layer.

The results of the Translucent Filter are by their nature quite understated. That too remains largely the same - the Plastic Film option has changed and now uses the video degradation plug-in to add some texture.

Feeling a bit stupid but where do I install these? I've rummaged through the GIMP/share folder and can't find any python scripts which would match.

These are .py plug-ins. Place in your user plug-in folder. Depends on your version of Gimp. If you have a portable Gimp, the plug-in folder is in Preferences. If regular Gimp: C:/Users/yourname/AppData/Roaming/Gimp/2.10

adaddinsane:
You didn't say which version of Gimp you are using or whether you are going to use the filter with text or with a shape etc.
There is a newer version of the metallic effects for custom fonts that has an option to work with the active layer that could be of use to you.
This is quite an old filter (although it still works in Gimp 2.10).

But as Pat says, whichever filter you download, needs to be installed in your Gimp user plug-in folder.
Best of luck.

Thanks for responding (both). I'm on 2.10.12.

Yes, I just found the fancier filters ... argh. Just too many of them.

Anyway, thanks, it prodded me to look further at the very least.

Hello,

I'm new to GIMP and learning as best as I can, but I can't get this plug-in to work. I copied the file into my plug-in file but I can't find it in Python-fu or if I paste the code directly, GIMP crashes. I also don't see anything under filters that says Custom Text or Alpha to Logo or Create Logo. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi LB.

Life can be so frustrating when you are new to Gimp - but stick with it.

This is now an old font tool but it still works on my Windows machine using Gimp 2.10.20. You did not say which version of Gimp you are running - which could be useful to know.

The filters should be in the following menu location if you installed them into your user plug-in folder:

Best of luck...

Filters>>Text FX

I'm afraid I have no knowledge of mac systems - where the location is for your user plug-ins for example. I do know that mac folk seem to have more problems with Gimp.

Stabs in the dark...

Wondered if you might consider an update for your Gimp to the latest version for your OS? Probably a big ask?

Also do you have any other downloaded plug-ins that show up in the Filters menu?

This plugin also does not work properly in Gimp 2.10.22 Windows

Just updated to 2.10.22 from gimp.org and sorry to report that both filters (not used them for ages) work perfectly for me - as do all the custom font tools tested so far. So I am at a loss to know why they do not work for you both...
