Actually it's not that hard if you can do hexadecimal. Just group the binary digits into groups of four and you've got hex. The binary to hex patterns are easy to learn since there are so few of them.

Also, binary to decimal is easier if you remember that 2^10 ~ 10^3 and that puts you in the right ball park. (2^10 = 1024)

Try and find a calculator that has RPN any more. The scientific calculator on my computer has that choice.

If you do it everyday, it becomes second nature. After awhile, it's not hard to go from Hex or Binary to ASCII.

I actually have this watch which displays the time in binary.

You press the button and the LEDs illuminate for a couple of seconds. During normal use, the battery lasts around 2 years, which ain't bad.

(That's an HP41CX with the Math/Stat add on cartridge. I paid ~$500CDN for it in 1986. Only problem I have with it is locating the 'N' batteries it requires - 4 of them)
