The ape certainly looks wistful. Nice treatment of the picture.

Is that a boat or a building? It's very unusual whatever it might be.

i think is both one of that type of boat used also as home or shop , often simultaneusly

But i saw now that i did a mistake for the boat, the image was part of a serie the first was CC so i thought was same for all the serie , but now looking for the credit i saw that i should have checked better :gaah

Oh well tomorrow (now here is time for a good nap ) i will contact the author
in the while i add a link for the original,

What filter was used on the third - just GMIC anisotropic smoothing?

Not only
Better start from image 2,
there i first used gmic "pencil" then ,mostly to break the pattern that the filter may create where the original has a solid color, i used Kuwahara with very moderate setting (1 iteration and 2 of radius ) so that pattern was breaked in splats but the main outline and details were preserved
then boosted the contrast (basically the same as contrast mask but skipping the convertion to negative of the desaturated layer )

Well for 3 i used similar step except for boosting the contrast (skipped ), so basically i got something as 2 but for more details and less contrast

Then i duplicated again the original applied a generous amount of anisotropic smoothing (high blurring but compensated by very high anisotropy ),

last i moved the bw layer on top and merged in multiply mode, (that darken but make the colors more vibrant )

I did play with a additional step: i am not very happy with contour (edge detect ) filter available (not only in gimp or in gmic, in general ) anyway Gmic "gradient norm " is usable, not only for enhance some detail but also to make a sort of lighten effect on the edges

Here i push the effect to make more evident , normally the first is the softer (the otline layer used at low opacity )

Here with higher opacity

Basically both are as image 3 but with this image (Gmic Gradient Norm, used on the original , and then very slighly blurred ) placed on top of 3 in "LIghten Only" mode...so since the BG is black in lighten mode only the withe ouline are merged

this was the " edges" layer

i think i should clear about the "pattern" i don't like

Here the pattern is quite cisible on the black brunch of the tree, on top, mostly on the right , and is even quite visible on the grey area just below the brunch, on the other hand the ape and the rest of the tree looks fine and detailed

Here that pattern is "broken" by the kuwahara effect ,

but the main details are preserved

Very nice PC!

Did you shrink down the boats at all? If you did could I have a full size of your second one?

:ninja

The boat is at original size, i believe would look better if the effect was applied at a larger scale and then the image scaled down, but was not a larger size available

Neat boat. I'm not a water person, I could go my whole life without being in or around it (other than the necessary stuff) but I could lounge in that for several days .
