That's a good 3D-effect! It makes me think of a steel statue, composed of solid blocks of shaped steel and maybe ball bearings; interesting!

My entry for the RAP this time. I pictured an android built by an alient species for this one, but the prompt said 'humanoid' so it couldn't be too alien. :D

I tried a city on a drifting asteroid as the island. I think its not real good - but takes practice.

In Griatch's two threads here, there is talk of art, sci-fi and images with background stories. So I thought I would join in.

They had heard some strange stories about Australia, but it was certainly not what the overseas visitors to the gorge in the Nitmiluk National Park, south of Darwin, had expected. Taking a cruise down the gorge they came across a floating rock island, supporting a circular, sandy base with termite citadel towers on top. More than that, two super gigantic termites were swimming behind the rock, pushing the citadel towers to a new home on the nearby sandy beach.

On questioning their tour guide about the incredible sight that was happening right in front of them, she responded with with typical Aussie humour; “Yeah, happens all the time around here”.

Cool story oldmangrumpy (I was thinking to visit Australia, now knowing there are huge giant termites... may be not :rofl )
leftyleo it's an interesting concept.
teapot that's a nice true floating island.

I did one more, because I wanted to do it "a la" Avatar as in the Griatch's comment.
I did a good start, though, then I got the idea to make the first water fall a golden waterfall, from that moment... Everything went south (forget Avatar) :oops:

So here is the result of my deviation (it was worse, I did remove things :hehe )
Using GIMP/G'MIC

A lot of cool floating islands in the thread!

@PixLab
Your two takes are fun, and quite different from one another too. The first one makes me think of cities above the atmosphere of Jupiter or somesuch. The golden waterfalls coming off the second one is neat. By the way - and that made me thing - floating islands often are depicted with waterfalls running off them. I get that it looks pretty, but where is all that water coming from ...?

@teapot
Took me a moment to notice that it's actually a steam trawler with a castle on its back! I like the style of this. Also, glad you enjoyed my Medusa :D

@leftyleo
I could certainly imagine asteroid cities being a thing at some point. A cool interpretation of the theme!

@oldmangrumpy
A good story to go with the image is always a good thing. Australia is certainly a place of wonder :) It makes sense to have some Aussie tour guide just shrugging giant termites off like it was nothing.

Interesting how people have really taken the theme to different places this time around, covering everything from fantasy to steam-punk, sci-fi and even nature-shows with termites. Very creative!

@Griatch, Very nice paint, the vessel in front reminds me of the movie "Mortal Engines" and the one at the bottom left, looks like it has some kind of Captain Nemo's tech :coolthup

As for the physics behind the waterfalls (with infinite flow of water), it's the same physics that made those island "floating" in space without any gravitational problem and allow the people living there, to breathe and have their windows open without a protection dome to keep their atmosphere correctly pressurized on an island so tiny that it is not in hydrostatic equilibrium, thus, also allowing the waterfalls to "fall" farther than the center of gravity :rofl

Thanks, yeah I had a few references in mind for this one.

I guess the floating is fine in the space case, but yeah, that's true for your images - there are a lot of magic going on there! I was more thinking of more 'realistic' depictions, like the floating island of Avatar which are supposedly meant to be realistic, but still has big water falls running off them. :)
