I wasn't sure if this should go in off topic or other graphic applications so I put it here. I'm accustomed to my Windows gimp being dark (one of the nodoka themes) and the light default theme in Linux is getting on my last nerve. I tried copying the themes I want into the themes folder and restarting gimp. They show in the themes list and I pick the one I want but nothing happens. Is there something else I need to do? This light theme is making me more crazy than I already am.

Is it possible in Linux to change only the GIMP icon set without the rest of the GTK set? In GIMP I seem to only be able to choose between small icons and large icons.

Download these and add them to your

1) for Linux: /usr/share/gimp/2.0/themes/
2) for Windows: ../GIMP-2.0/share/gimp/2.0/themes/
3) for Mac: ..i/don't/know/but/something/similar/
NOTE: you will not be forced to replace your default icons.

You should not need to do anything else but restart Gimp, and choose the icon set from the themes menu item in preferences.
You can also go into your themes folders and select a small or default set (COPY IT) and redesign the copied version any way you wish.Then just rename it to whatever you want and select it in edit/pref/themes

i almost forgot... you will need to add the path to the icon folder.

in linux it's probably best to place any new themes into
/home/cecilia/.gimp-2.6/themes
(your name will not be cecilia, but I'm sure you get the point)

Then AFAIK you will have to change the system theme.

Ok, I tried doing it the way you said, Rod, but it still doesn't work. I don't know if it matters but the themes I used were copied from the windows Gimpthemes 1.0 utiity. Do I need to have other ones or will those work?

Then you are going to be stuck. GS themes very nice greyscale icons but for the windows to be dark you will need to change and maybe tweak your system theme.

The GS themes only need to go in your local gimp themes directory, don't have to put them in the global.

Sorry GMS i have no idea how to get your themes to work in Linux as i am not familiar with the system that much.
Those GS icons are just another set of tool icons that do not require the dll engine to work.
The themes all need to have the dll engine particular to their theme setup.
For instance there are probably 4 different Aurora themes and they all need just the one dll engine library libaurora.dll.All these dll engines go into a folder in the Gimp program directory named "engines"
engines is a sub folder of the gimp-2.0/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0 folder.(at least in windows it is), not sure about Linux.
You could try grabbing the correct dll engine and adding it to that engine folder and see if that works.

It's ok. I'll figure it out. I know themes can be used in Linux, Rolf at MTG uses Linux usually and his is themed. I might pop over there and ask him about it. Right now i have more urgent issues to deal with. I have to replace a dead laptop, move one computer to another spot in the house and make my test one into my temporary main one.
