You can also have GIMP remember your window settings upon closing, so that when you open, all your docks are where you left them.

this may be sufficent for a quick but good start :paint

If you don't mind doing command prompt work, G'MIC can also work with higher bit images. GIMP G'MIC is still only for 8-bit per color channel (and alpha; forgot to mention that earlier) though. Still like the fire preset David and that's a cool skull Rod. :)

a bit hidden in the experimenthal menu you should found also in the GMIC plugin some filters working at 16 bit
(basically all gmic filter may work not only at 16 but even at 32 bit: sure gimp would convert in 8 bit but that may be avoided since gmic do not strictly need to use gimp to save the output.
If the option is limited to a few filters is mainly because apparently few use or even noticed it ,and nobody else asked to extend it to other filters (i did for the few in the list, but i do not want ask too much )
And because for developers the concept of a plugin that may load/save images indipendently from its host is somehow bizarre and confusing...even if allow to bypass gimp 8bit bottleneck and to edit at 16 bit

If you want to dock your windows, on the left and right (single window mode) check out GIMP 2.7.3 compiled for Windows by Partha. These builds can be found at http://www.partha.com

I hope I'm not going to be scolded for going off topic, but I still haven't been able to get pspi to work. Can someone assist in this? It shows in my filters menu, but nothing ever happens when I select it.

Thanks

I don't like use pspi, it make most of preview unusable and works very poorly on linux

I much prefer use xnview (with the ShellOut script) works well also in Windows as with linux (with wine but also pspi need wine to work )

Somebody (i believe Lylejk) reported PSPI broken by some changes in last stable gimp so i fear use ShellOut+ xnview not only the best but as now the only solution to run PS filter

Regarding the fire in the video posted by Eric_Woods: You could easily make that and better in GIMP with experience using graphics editors.

It's not Photoshop that makes the fire or the whole image look good, it's his skill and knowledge. He's really good with layers, layer modes and coloring. He uses a brush that looks like flames and works his artistic magic on the rest.

So part of it is being proficient with the program you're using and the other part is artistic ability, however you want to classify that.

Still works on some PS filters but not those created using Filter Meister (which is a pretty big number of them). I still use a few plugins like Impressionist (thanks to RobA for figuring out how to get this plugin to work using PSPI) and GML Matting (no longer free, but I got the plugin when the license for it was completely free; they made improvements since the version I have, but happy with what I got). :)

PSPI when selected in the Filters/Photo Shop Plugin Settings menu should open a path save dialog similar to Gimps folder path dialog. Then you just need to add the paths to each 8bf filter you want to use.
What i did was create a folder named Gimp on my desktop, and inside that folder is one named 8bf.I direct the path to PSPI too that folder. This way if i want to add one i just place it in that folder and Gimp (PSPI) initializes it on launch. No need to ever open PSPI again.

If it's in your menu and you can click it and nothing happens re-install it.

OR
Like PC said get the Shellout.py Rob A. created and call XnView and it can run most 8bf filters with ease.
Shellout saves the current layer and exports it to Xnview. Then you do what you want with it, save the image and it gets imported back into Gimp.Pretty cool program and you can call many programs with it.
You will need to install Xnview for it to work.
If you need help setting it up holler at me with a PM and i will set you up. :)

Nixnine, what OS and etc, are you using?

After GIMP 2.6.11, it sort of "broke" PSPI. I no longer use it. I use shellout with XnView, instead.

Mahvin, I see you're a very enthusiastic person, but no needs to spread inexact informations to other people :)
GIMP has been used for years without the G'MIC plug-in, and nobody was complaining too much.
Anyway, thanks for your support (also Lyle, Rod, PhotoComiX, Willy), it seems that finally you are using it more than I do.

I love you :sdrunk

David:

Who can fault the ignorant masses of their cold and ghostly past? G'MIC is something I use everyday, mainly for smoothing portraits and ramping up contrast and color balance for the image repairs I do. It is one essential tool, and I also get a kick out of playing with all the wonderful filters created by the enthused G'MIC lovers (including yourself!). It's MAGIC!

:) :sdrunk :cheers

Ah; see you are up very early David; it's 2:53am here (insomniac I am but about to hit the sack). Must be around 7 or 8 am your time. I do agree with Mahvin. G'MIC really took GIMP to the next level and I've gotten a lot of responses from PS users. If someone would ever port G'MIC as a 8bf, you would make a lot of folk happy. Maybe an 8bf that could call G'MIC as a stand-alone much like how shellout works. Then, G'MIC can still get it's updates independent from the 8bf itself. :)

I'm not a early riser, it's already 10am here :)
Nice idea Lyle, but don't count on me to add features to such a closed-source and expensive project :)
Hope that the GIMP team will retain a compatibility with the 'old' plug-in API in future GIMP versions, that is the only thing I wish ! I don't want to throw the plug-in to the trash too quickly.

I'm just thinking about all the other cool programs like XNView and Irfanview that can use PS compatible plugins too David. But I do agree that this is a project for someone else who has more skin in the game then you of course. Just glad that I'm primarily a GIMPer so I get to use such a cool plugin on a daily basis. :)

I am using Mint 9. I was going to try xnview and shellout but never got around to it. Not for sure where to start on that. Would like to though if it's better. I found XnView 1.8. is that the current one? Plus I can't seem to get it installed.

EDIT: Okay. I have xnview installed but when I open an image in it, it has a transparency of about 75%. Is that normal? And will it affect the shellout script(which I haven't tried to install yet). See attached screenshot.

I hardly know what you guys are talking about. This thread seems to be falling apart...

Well, I'm excited now. I just got my Bamboo pen from UPS. Yeah! Now I can start sketching away.

I've been prepping my hard drive lately for a new installation of LinuxMint to go along with my new Bamboo pen. I figure since Gimp and Blender are opensource programs, I might be able to run them smoother in Linux. Plus, I don't need the distraction of 100 gigs worth of commercial games on my computer to distract me from work. I'm going to miss MS Word, Encarta and Civ 4 though. I'll keep Windows just in case I want to play an old game but it's looking more and more like I should just delete Vista altogether so I don't have to deal with that headache. Besides, there's enough free games on Linux to keep me occupied if I ever need a little entertainment. I think Blender and Gimp will be much faster under Linux. Now if this defragging will just finish quickly... I'm starting to get a little impatient waiting for my hard drive to finish defragging so I can try out my new Wacom tablet.

That's what I plan on doing, Rod. As soon as I finish tinkering with my new Linux install I'll get to work on some art. Linuxmint looks a lot sharper and cleaner than my Vista OS. And it's got these really cool animation effects. My pen tablet works great, btw. I checked it out earlier and it was a little difficult getting used to at first and Gimp seems to be a lot faster in Linux with loading and pen response.
