I've been checking out Geeqie, a cool new image viewer for Linux. Geeqie is powerful but lightweight and best of all, it's FOSS.

I'm pretty impressed with all the features and the speed.

I am really pleased with the Geeqie project. I have been using Slackware since version 5 (about the time I bought my '83 Corvette ) and there are only two applications in Slackware which were not Free Software (as defined by the Free Software Foundation); one was a mail client (PINE) which I never used, and the other was the image viewer XV (XV was only "free of cost" for non-commercial usage and unlike "free as in freedom" software such as GIMP, only the original authors were permitted to distribute modified versions).

With the advent of geeqie I am able to remove all "non-Free" software from my computers; and this gives me a great deal of warm-fuzzy feelings.

The only thing I've found lacking in Geeqie so far is that some rotated JPEGs are shown with the incorrect orientation.

Wondering if it can be the default image viewer so that it comes up when double-clicking an image.

What does make it better than Gwenview or Okular? (both GPLv2)

Usage of GTK+ and lack of dependency upon KDE libraries (for me, anyway).

Yes. In Gnome, right-click/properties a file and under the "open with" tab, choose Geeqie. You'll need to do that for each image file type. The version of Gnome in F13 uses this method to associate file types with applications.



Okukar is KDE app so it initially loads slower due to KDE lib deps and Gwenview is not as robust as Geeqie but I think both of those are good apps. I guess it just depends on what you want an image browser to do. So far, Geegle seems feature rich and fast. As saul pointed out, there might be a few bugs though, being it's the first release. It's a fork of the gqview project, which was abandoned.

Have Geeqie on Fedora 12 now and file permissions transferred to Geeqie. Very cool! Laptop is updating so will wait to change those associations.

I love the slideshow feature. Browse a folder of images. Find the image and send to Gimp, or another graphics program.
