I did updated the manual as well (you won't believe it, but I think it's the longest part when you write a script or plugin, and the worse is that we know that nobody will read it )

Everything happened on G-F, inspired by Rich2005, and Ofnuts trying to put me on the right Path
Starting from a script batch exporting only the selected layer in an image to a full export export of the image with more options.

Purpose.
Batch export all opened images in GIMP at once to JPG, PNG, WebP, TIFF, BMP, without the need to export them one by one, nor the need to interact with the user interface each time an image is exported as everything can be automated.

Use case example: you sliced your image from a guide’s grid of 10x10, and you have 100 new opened images (red rectangle below). Or simply, like everyday, you just did work on a dozen of images at a time and want them to be exported ASAP just to check the final image, but you need to work more on them and re-export them with the same setting at once.
This script will do the job in a matter of seconds.

Recommendation: This script will override existing image with the same name and extension, even though it will auto-number each exported image to not match an existing name, it’s better that you create a new folder for the exported images to not override the original images.

I'm thinking about Tin (trandoductin), and for me it's a good idea to put also the code written in the comment like he does, because Wayback Machine, rarely save the zips, thus in case of, people can still access the code, even if archive.org did not save the zip

I actually don't understand why you would batch export all images (layers) at the same time? I do all layers in series (but at the same time) with ofnuts 'export all layers'.
Do you have multiple canvasses open at the same time or have I missed something?

Have you thought about creating a code repository on GitHub? It's pretty easy to do.

No layers, all opened images (multiple canvas)
You can go very quickly to 25 new images with this example:
Make a grid of 5x5 guides

Then go to Image > Slice Using Guides... and you got 25 new images, and there is nothing in GIMP to Batch Export them all at once, or you do it manually by going to File > Export... one by one where also... you need to enter a new name each time if you don't want the original name.


BTW I did completely re-do the script, to let users input their own settings for each type of image type, I'm gonna open a thread for it on GC

Thanks, for the suggestion, but I got one from years ago to report bugs or ask questions (still never use it for something else, thus I don't know how to use it, even if I tried to push some buttons there or over there, not knowing what did I do )

I did rewrite the script completely, new user interface, new menu.
Now you can export all opened images with your own setting,
also before, once your images exported, GIMP did not ask if you want to save the XCF when closing GIMP, (thanks to Michael Schumacher to have point this out), now it's an option, etc... etc...

Download it at the 1st original post (thread begining) I did left the old script (they can work side by side), but it's recommended to remove the old one from your scripts folder

I agree with you. Github changed their security policy. It's a hassle now. IMHO, providing a phone number to a service provider is a global data broker scam.

I have tons of JPG images on my mobile phone, each of which is more than 1.3MB in size.

I wish to reduce the file sizes of these JPG images.

I am using Microsoft Windows 11 64-bit and Gimp 2.10.38

When I open a JPG file, there's a dialog box with the title "Convert to RBG Working Space?"

I'm given two options: Convert or Keep

Well, I choose Convert

Next, I click on File --> Export As

I click on the button called Export and a dialog box appears with the words "A file named xxxxx.jpg already exists. Do you want to replace it?"

I click on the button called Replace

Next a box called Export Image as JPEG appears

I want to set the Quality at 50

I don't want to tick/check the boxes next to:

Save Exif data
Save XMP data
Save color profile

I don't wish to have automatic renaming of JPG files because I wish to keep the original JPG filenames.

Can you help me to come up with a script that does the above please?

Irrespective of PixLabs script, what you are describing is a batch plugin.



...but first a mention of jpeg compression. It is not linear, there is not much file size difference between quality=70 and quality=50 but you can get a lot of degradation at lower values. This is a typical curve (it always depends on the images and the purpose)

Really recommend keeping the originals safe somewhere. Once squashed, always squashed. Those settings get the example image down from 1.26 MB to 334 KB

My script has no access to these options (I would recommend to keep the color profile, though)

The plugin that rich2005 gave you is excellent, and I recommend it as well!
But for this very kind of batch processing, I won't use GIMP.
I would use ImageMagick > https://imagemagick.org/ but it's a command line software, for a graphical software I would use XnConvert > https://www.xnview.com/en/xnconvert/ , it's easy and it is extremely fast to batch process thousands of pictures.

Could you explain that statement of yours please? I don't have much technical background in graphics.

If that's the case, then I don't see any good reason to reduce the file sizes of my JPG files.

On the other hand, I don't want to buy a 2TB or 4TB portable SSD just for storing the screenshots that I take with my mobile phone.

But then again, according to the very useful diagram that you attached to your reply, for archival of personal photos, the quality setting should be between 85 and 95, yes/no?

I've heard about ImageMagick a lot because I use Debian 12 (a.k.a. bookworm) 64-bit version as well. I'm just a casual user of Linux distros and am not proficient in using them.

I prefer to use the Debian package manager to install ImageMagick. The version of ImageMagick for Debian Bookworm is 8:6.9.11.60+dfsg-1.6+deb12u1

Does XnConvert has a limit to the number of JPG files to be process each time? For example, XnConvert can only process 50 jpeg files each time??

The compression curve. As you can see it is a curve not a straight line. You can not use a linear interpolation. For example the amount of compression for quality=50 is not half of quality=100 (yes a 100 jpeg is still compressed). Do not worry about it.



It says use quality 40 to 60 for posting images on the internet. Smaller file sizes = saving on band with / site storage...



Up to you, always a chance you lose all you work without backups. The reduction in size is what you get with your specified quality=50

BIMP. Using Debian so that might not be available unless you compile it yourself. A flatpak Gimp does have it as a special flatpak BIMP version. No limit of the number of files but it might be slow. So lets forget BIMP

ImageMagick. This very straight forward. Go to the folder containing the jpegs and if you want a size of about say, 400 kb (your quality=50 requirement) the command in a terminal is:



Beware mogrify will overwrite the original sized image. It might slow down where there are many images.

XnConvert - yes there is a linux version. I often use the larger XnViewMP - I use the linux appimage.
