Half an image lost

Operating System: Windows
GIMP Experience: New User

Hello all!

This is my first real post here, because this problem is what brought me to this forum in the first plcace. You see, last time I was using gimp, I got a bunch of error notifications, but they didnt stop the program from working or anything, so I dismissed them. Now when I try to open the file I was working on at that time, half the image doesn't load. The layers are there, they're simply blank. Now when I think about it, the error notifications were probably due to little free space on the drive (I've cleaned it a little by now). I've saved the file manually before closing, but it didn't seem to do anything.
Does anyone know if there's a way to get my file back?

It sounds like your GIMP file might have been corrupted
due to the lack of free space on your drive.
Here are a few steps you can try to recover your file:

Open with a Different Program:
Try opening the file with another image editing program
to see if it can recover any of the data.

Export to Another Format:
If the file opens partially, try exporting it to another
format (e.g., PNG, JPEG) to see if the other program can recover more of the image data.

Use File Recovery Software:
If the file is partially corrupted,
file recovery software might be able to restore some of the lost data.
There are various tools available like Recuva, PhotoRec, etc.

To add to Wallace's suggestion, https://www.photopea.com/ will open your XCF, if it is not so corrupted, in photopea save your image via the menu "File > Save as PSD", then open that PSD in GIMP
Example a XCF opened in photopea.com (it's free as in free beer)

Thank you, Wallace. I've tried the methods you've listed but unfortunately to no result. Opening in a different program (photopea) and exporting (.png) gave the same results and recovering programs (recuva and rescuePRO) gave mostly files relating to my web browser. The problem seems to be with losing a portion of the data, since I can open the file with no problem, but even the layers are shown empty.

You mean PSD?
It's a photoshop extension, not recommended if you want to keep all your job and settings like guides or selection (not sure, though), prefer XCF,
it was just that photopea does not export as XCF but PSD and PSD is "relatively" compatible to a certain point with GIMP, and in this case to test if with another format it would work.
