Just doodling around playing in Krita with brushes I don't usually use and layer modes. It looks like a Prog Rock album cover!

Thank you Sallyanne. I tried to replicate it in Gimp but it lacks the special brush for the swirls and it lacks colour dodge layer mode. I tried working on a dodge layer mode but it's not the same. Maybe one day they will implement it.

Have you tried making the brush in gimp Erisian? You can make them with paths as well you know and save as a brush.

Question? What's the difference between dodge and colour dodge layer mode?

Erisian my old mate- thank you for the challenge of replicating the 'Dove' in Gimp. Quickly made 6 or so quick brushes to help out, then just went with the flow

Sallyanne - the brush has a particular effect that I like. When you draw a line and in the same stroke change direction to create a corner, the corner is automatically filled in. It also happens when, in the same stroke, you cross your line - it creates fill-ins in the corners of the cross. There was a way to do it in Gimp using a small stack of legacy layer modes including legacy burn mode and a fuzzy brush but I cannot remember it and cannot replicate it.

Colour dodge mode is mathematically different from dodge and creates a different effect, saturating colours so that they glow like coloured lights. Dodge does this to some degree too but it is not the same. Krita has three dodge modes: Easy dodge, Linear dodge and color dodge and they all give different effects.

Erisian - re "Did you keep the swirls from the original" - everything was done from the ground up in Gimp, using paths to create brushes to replicate those 'swirls'. Once they are painted on the canvas, they could obviously be embellished if required.

Oh yes. I just had a closer look and I can see the differences between yours and mine. You did that really well!
