I installed the version 1.5.0.....on my Vista laptop..

had a few problems as I didn't know what I was doing to install it. I kept dragging the downloaded file to the C:/....program files../Gimp/2.0...eccera folder (the plugin folder) and was getting dll error message. But I eventually wised up ( I think ) and copied it to folder and not the opened folder. At least it worked and installed. When it ran, it asked to install in my user account, "sure, why not" and I let it.

It ran fine and I looked at it .. but then the problem with it constantly wanting to install.

Question: is the .exe just an installer? Can I remover it, or should I remove it from the plugin folder? Is this the reason it keeps trying to install?

You need to look in your plug-ins folder and remove the installer for GMIC.Gimp runs any exe in that plug-ins folder.
Leave the DLLs, and the gmic_gimp.exe file and the _gmic folder in there though.

Wasn't confident to remove it as I was thinking it needed to stay in there. None of the info I had read about to install mentioned to remove it afterwards. I'm am a noob to this.

Now, on to other issues with installing Gimp ace-0.6.7 and a missing dll file here! argh... stay tuned for more fun.

Keep in mind the only exe and scripts that should go directly into the plug-ins folder are windows binarys (those exe's that look like little windows), and Python files.

And always install everything into your user/gimp-2.6/plug-ins folder.
Usually you can find it here
C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserNameHere\.gimp-2.6\plug-ins
You will also find all the sub folders where you should install SCM scripts (scripts folder), and brushes and other resources you want to add on to Gimp.

I have a similar problem.

I use Gimp Portable on a Vista laptop and when ever I start up the Gimp Portable I get this:

gmic_gimp.exe has stopped working

The only way I can get Gimp to finish loading is to close the gmic.exe

Maybe this is a Vista problem because when I use Gimp Portable on my sisters desk top with windows 7 gmic.exe loads without any error messages?

after killing that dialog did you checked if GMIC is in the menu and if works ?

Anyway is not a similar case in the first case the gmic installer was by mistake added in the plugin folder, from what you wrote there is not a request to install gmic but a message about crash , so first is relevant see if gmic is really crashed
( and if you have some clone of gmic_gmic.exe and its dll somewhere...anyway first check if works)

You could also just open the uninstall folder in Plug-ins folder and run the GMIC uninstaller.Then re-install GMIC-1.5 into your Gimp_Portable\App\gimp\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins folder.

You could probably just re-install without un-installing if you need to do that (in case the uninstall folder is missing).

That will work if there is only 1 gmic installed, and installed in the user folder, but no if there are more or not where expected,... neither if are orphan gmic-related dll left floating somewhere after some failed attempt to install gmic

Personally i always suggest to create a new folder, place gmic there, and link the folder from preference, instead then search "the right folder for the plugin"...but it is as talk to the wind, most prefer hunt ( or explain where to find) that supposed right folder, instead then simply create (or explain how to create)a new one

BUT plugin as gmic or mathmap containing more then 1 file, are much easy to handle if installed in a their own folder, instead then dumped with other plugins in the plugin folder

Back to Sylvertail problem before do anything i will check if Gmic works or not (that crash message may come from another gmic_gimp.exe placed somewhere else )

That is the best way to do it.Give it it's own folder, and then link from the Edit/Preferences/Folders/Plug-ins.
I find more and more that 8bf's also work better that way.
Actually the only way i could get Gimp-Sharp to work correctly was to do that.

I don't have any problems installing G'MIC to Programs but I can't get the newest verson of G'MIC into the portable version of (James) Gimp 2.7
I looked in preferences under folders > plug-ins) This is what it shows. Do I install it into one of the ones below?

If you install it into any one of those directories Molly it should work.
Gimp should be able to initialize it anyways.

Edit: tried both and I still have the 1.4 version in Gimp 2.7 and it won't fresh any new plug-ins
