As mentioned before, I have been learning Blender and created a character model from scratch. You will find this character appearing in other images from me; it's an android girl I'm creating for a little planned visual novel game. Since such a game is mostly dialogue, facial expressions are important. I've continued to rig and have been experimenting with facial expressions, improving facial muscles and controls. Here are some of the latest outcomes :)
(original size images on DA).

All generated in Blender, with cropping and organizing using Gimp (and a little Krita).

Image
General facial view, rendered with 80mm focal length, aiming for a serene, and a little melancolic look.

Image
Various stages of surprise and disbelief

Image
Outrage, anger and general growling :)

Image
Scepticism, curiosity and maybe a less extreme take on surprise or sadness.

Image
Various tests for mouth shapes and more extreme eye/eyebrow positions.

Image
Mischievous expressions, tests of extreme deformation of the cheek and distortion caused by a wide smile.

Overall, I find it harder to produce a realistic and not cringe-inducing happy expression than most of the other emotions. :gaah A tight smile is fine, but an open-mouth laugh is very hard to look natural across the face, and something I still need to work on.

Feedback is appreciated!

That’s fantastic progress Griatch.
Your android character is really coming to life!
:clap

The expressions show great control and subtlety,
with natural eye and brow work and lighting
that beautifully enhances the mood.

The only area that might need a bit more polish
is, as you mentioned, the open mouth smile.
Adding a touch more cheek lift or asymmetry
could make it feel even more genuine.

Overall, you’re doing excellent work.
Keep refining those details,
and you’ll have a wonderfully expressive
character for your novel!

Wow! Those are stunning 3D models Griatch. You are really getting the hang of Blender. :)

Thanks! Yeah, the open-mouth smiles are very easy to make to look weird. Especially when teeth start to show. Going asymmetric is indeed a good approach (like I tried for the second image below), I'm also experimenting with adding personality and playfulness using other means, such as with her eyes (first and third images):

Thanks! I've been learning Blender for real for about a year now I think. This is the third iteration of the character, and considering for how long Blender always felt like an impenetrable black hole to me, I'm glad to be able to finally have made it to the point where I can use it with some confidence. Glad you like it!

@lylejk: Fun idea, if using a very different program and process :)

You have done really well with these expressions, You will get there with the one you think you are having trouble with with I am sure. After all you are continually trying - practice makes perfect!

Thanks, yeah, it's a process. But working with the 3D model, I do find that I learn a bit about the shapes of the face useful for regular 2D drawing as well. :)

(click for bigger DA version)

A lot of details in this one! This is more work with expression and the use of light.
