toolbox is in separate window

GIMP Version: 2.6.11
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

The toolbox and main window are in separate windows, i didn't notice this before, i could always hide/unhide the toolbox with the tab key but now it has a minimize button and shows up in its own window in the task bar

It looks to me like your layer tab is attached to the tools tab. At the top of the layers (opposite the word layers) is a small arrow in a little box. click that and you will see a dropdown menu. See if the word detach tab isn't grayed out. Click that and try grabbing the word layers with your mouse and drag it off the tools tab. Then, if your want your toolbox to be on the left side of your screen, drag it over and leave your layers on the right side. You can add other things to that if you want, like brushes, paths, gradients, etc.

I have layers docked to the toolbox on the laptop (win 7) and i only get the one window open when i mouse over gimp on the task bar, it's not really a big deal. I think i will like 2.8 or 2.10 when it's ready..everything in one window

I'm not quite sure what the problem being described is, but you might want to experiment with the choices for 'Hint for Toolbox Window' in "Edit->Preferences->Window Management".
