Use the 'special joins' alternative option and the 'behind the previous character' option with Paragrapher v2.7b (Gimp 2.10) to display the joining characters correctly.

Spain is experiencing one of the worst heat waves ever recorded for this time of year.
It's like living in an oven. Thanks to the air conditioning, even at night.
