GIMP Version: 2.7.2
Operating System: Linux
OS Version: Ubuntu Natty
GIMP Experience: Basic Level

List any relevant plug-ins or scripts:
Open Raster plugin

List any ERROR messages you received:
ImportError: /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimp.so: undefined symbol: PyGimpItem_Type

Hi there, I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I've been trying out Gimp 2.7.2 and found the brush engine is much closer to what I was after, but when I made the upgrade I lost support for ORA files, which I was using to share files with MyPaint. I removed the plugin I was using in case it was conflicting with the one provided with 2.7.2, but it just doesn't seem to run. When I ran Gimp with the terminal there were several plugins which reported errors, including the openraster one, and for each it showed the error

ImportError: /usr/lib/gimp/2.0/python/gimp.so: undefined symbol: PyGimpItem_Type

I updated it using the repository Matthaeas has on his website (https://launchpad.net/~matthaeus123/+ar ... w-gimp-svn) and the only thing I changed before the upgrade was adding the old openraster plugin and have python 2.7 installed. The plugin is definately in the base directory (/usr/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/[plugin name])

Has anyone seen this problem before, and if so found a way around it? It's a real pain to lose support for ora files since it means I need to flatten any images I switch over to Gimp with, and it's supposed to be a built-in feature now so I'm not sure why it's not working.

Thanks for your help :tyspin

Very probably (edit: almost certainly) its the python 2.7. Looked it up at distrowatch and ubuntu 11.x comes with python 2.7.1

The only 'buntu I maintain is a LM9-64 and gimp 2.7.2 opens and exports mypaint ora files without problem but it has python 2.6 installed.

Do you have problems with other python plug-ins?
If not, and as a really long shot try the gimp 2.6 'file-ora.py' plug-in from
http://registry.gimp.org/node/18435 It does say not to do this but it is worth a try.

edit: A re-read and you have already done this.

Otherwise, is there a python 2.6 in the repo? or a backport? Maybe ask the question on an ubuntu forum.

Hi Solidsquid,
I use Gentoo Linux.
On a separate partition I experiment with Gimp-2.7.
I use git to d/l the sources.
My last install was on august 5.
The plugin you're talking about was installed in /usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plugins alright.
It shows up in python-fu console.
However the "PyGimpItem_Type" is nowhere to be found.
I searched /usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/python and /usr.
So it has nothing to do with your python version,it simply doesn't exist.
A lot of scripts and plugins have changed syntax.
We'll have to wait until someone will rewrite them.
Gerard.

Edit: I never used Mypaint because I can't paint or draw.
This problem intrigued me enough to install it.
I scrawled something and saved it as test.ora.
It opened in Gimp w/o a hitch.
I wrote a howto for installing Gimp 2.7 from git sources:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1261
Then you'll have the latest issue.

Thanks a lot for your help folks, I'll try using an earlier version of Python and I'll see about installing Gimp from the GIT repository. Hopefully one of those will fix the issue

Tried installing from GIT, works perfectly now. Must be a bug that's been resolved but hasn't made it into the repositories yet. Thanks a lot for the help
