I downloaded a set of patterns for ice but when I open the zip file there's only a jpg that shows all the patterns in the pack and a single .pat file. No matter where I put it I can't get these patterns to show up. I finally had to do a rectangle select on each pattern in the jpeg, resize, Map>make seamless, and save each as a separate jpeg to get them into my patterns. Mine show up and all look great when used but I have several other patterns I have downloaded in the past that won't show up either. Some are "packs" and some are individual patterns. What gives?

You can put the eight jpg's right into your pattern folder just the way they are.

Try dragging the pat file into the GIMP work area (with no images opened, beforehand). I am assuming you mean a different file than the one linked because those .jpg files can be added to the pattern folder as they are (as Molly has suggested).

Been there/done that. All are jpegs and in my patterns folder and they all work. As I stated before...."Mine show up and all look great when used but" that's not the problem. The problem is getting these "packs" to open. The 20MB zip file contained only one .pat file and the jpeg file I used to create my smaller jpeg patterns from. The orignial .pat file doesn't show up anywhere.

It is most likely a Adobe PAT extension which is different than Gimps PAT extension.
Adobes allows for more than one image per PAT file.Gimp allows 1.
There used to be a plugin loadpspatfiles.exe or something like that.

Thanks Rod. You are correct. I checked three of the others and they are all PS pat files. Duh. Now that I have the zip file you posted what do I do with the two files contained therein?(the 686 files)

Place the exe file in your plug-ins folder, reboot GIMP.

Assuming I have it installed correctly, where does the PS pat loader show up or how is it used?

I just drag a pat file into GIMP (not having anything else open in GIMP) and it opens the file, usually multiple images as layers show up.

Yeah its been a while since i have used this and i get an error with this plugin.Unsupported color i imagine.


Probably needs to be re-compiled or needs another dll file that Linux already has in it's library.

I know SamJ compiled this just recently for 64 bit but not for 32 bit.The last compile for 32 bit was 2009 i believe.
Well i would just load the images themselves.Most websites give you a choice to either dl the pat file or the separate PNG files.

Or you could ask Sam to re-compile it.

Got a pat file I can borrow to test with? I could hunt one down somewhere.

No. Anyone with PS (depending on the version) could open the patterns and save them as pngs. I already tried with PS 8 and they didn't work. I'm not near my computer with CS4 so I can't check.

I would try and open them from the Gimp open file menu.
Sometimes you can not drag and drop images into Gimp but it will open them through the File/Open menu.

Try that first.If it works Gimp will open all the pat files in single layers then use GAP to save all layers as separate png images.Then just throw them all in the patterns folder or direct a path to them from Edit/Pref/Patterns

adobe and gimp use a extension with same name .pat for a very different type of file

to complicate things pat for PS_CS may be not compatible with older PS anyway should be some free utility to convert ps pat in png (not referring here to gimp plugin but to little standalone sw )
