I want to do this tutorial but the gfig in my Gimp is not the same as the one on the tutorial. Does anyone else have this problem?

I have the top one. I did find the source for the bottom one but I can't compile it.

Molly, I see what you see, but my menu doesn't show like yours does in the 2nd screenshot. Are you wanting to make spirals?

The second image is the one in the tutorial, not in Molly's. I corrected the post so that it was clear where the second image is from.

Back to the first post, tutorial screenshot, it is a really old version of gfig. It once was a separate plugin for gimp.

goes into reminiscing mode: soft spot for demon, they were my first ISP in'95

anyway the gfig incorporated into Gimp has a different interface (first screenshot) but everything is there, just in different places, crucially there is no preview pane, it gets drawn straight into the active image window as a new gfig transparent layer.

To what tutorial are you referring? I do not see a tutorial at the specified link.

the Object list on the right panel menu im image2 correspond more or less to the symbol list on top.
In this case i can't summarize the help because the tool is complex and the help already summarized too much

About details missed in the Help :
i am sure that Gfig may save and load presets but this is not obvious by looking to the interface
(I know it can do only because once i stumbled over the folder supposed to contain Gfig User's presets,but no idea of where are hidden in the filter interface the options about presets...well that File and Edit menu and the arrow at the top right seem the most probable hiding places)

Yes, first guess was right File menu is for load save preset and Edit menu to edit them,about the arrow at the top right that that went MIA

Honestly i found such complex tool without a proper help page of no practical use ..well maybe because i am a bitmap guy maybe who more in Vector Graphic may count on similarity with other vectors tool to find a way to use it

A pity because it can be a powerful tool...but again a cryptic interface and a incomplete help combined together are a too big handicap

Here is the info you requested, Molly. I made the spiral with gfig - see image for which tool used - then traced it with the path tool.

Thanks Nixnine, if you use the paintbrush for your spiral, you won't have to trace it, it goes straight to your canvas. Just found that out a few minutes ago.
BTW, how did you get your text to start at the beginning of the coil?

Start with the path tool at the end of the spiral. Make a point at each top and bottom of the spiral ring. Careful not to twist the curves around at the points. Do it like that and the Text to Path object begins where you started.

It doesn't show the screen shots in its entirety on how to create the path spiral, but the idea is once you select the spiral by color, and then save to Path, you can delete all the portions of the path you don't want. It works very quickly, I discovered.
