Greetings!

Seen tons for tuts and scripts for creating chrome text. Can I apply the same techniques for a shape? I usually come up with goofy looking results when I use tuts that are made for text.

Any help, tips, pointers, tuts ... well just anything that'll help me out is very appreciated!

I attached the file I'm using to this post.

Thanks much!

Check this one out. Also, can try Fencepost Chrome (too lazy to find that one right this minute but believe it's also hosted by the Registry). :)

Thanks!

The first one not quite what I was looking for. So I proceeded on to fence posts on deviant art. I found the script.

Here's were I run into problems! I can never get these alpha to logo script to work with a selection. I created a new layer then went to the channels and got me selection mask and did a channel to selection switched back over to the layers and did filters -> alpha to logo. Ah, it just turns things dark, very dark. So obviously I'm doing something wrong. This isn't the first time either I've tried other alpha to logo filters and get the same results so it's something I'm not doing.

If you could sir just give me the readers digest version of working with alpha to logo filters?

Thanks again!

First, on your layer of choice, you need to add an alpha channel. Go to layer's dialogue and then right-click on your layer and if it doesn't already have an alpha Channel, just add Alpha Channel.

Now, create your selection islands and to invert selection and cut it out. Deselect, then run the Script-fus. :)

OK, I used my shiny text tutorial on your splat after I made its opacity 100. viewtopic.php?p=177#p177

This is the result. I scaled the image, but the xcf file is still the original size. If you're interested I'd be happy to walk you through the tutorial to adapt it to your splat image.

That's what I was missing! I worked as well but didn't give me what I wanted either.

Thanks for your help Lyle!

That's getting to what I like!

Granted the xcf image is huge the end product would be about 40% of that.

Which is the wiser? To work on the huge on and scale down or to scale down and then work on it?

Here's my go at chromifying your splatter -

Looks chromey, even if the light is all weird. I didn't try too hard with it and could have done better with the drop shadow... Oh well! I got that result following three tutorials that all do the same thing.

At the GUG site: Chrome text. This is a pretty compact tutorial, maybe not for beginners.

On YouTube, so you can see it in action (poor quality video, but nice result): Creating Metal Text in The Gimp.

On Penguin Pete's Blog site: Metallic Text. A little different than the others, but looks the same at the end.

All are for text, but work for shapes too, as you can see from the one I did. You can skip the steps where they're smoothing the corners of the letters.

Thank you Amanda!

I had one last question before I really dig my heals into this at that was:

Which is the wiser?
To work on the huge and scale down or to scale down and then work on it?

Thanks again!

I would work on the huge scale, then scale down when it is finished. From what I have understood so far is that when you scale up, it has a tendency to distort.

I agree. It's better to start big and then scale when finished.

I'd say, it is better to start at the size you want the results at, as both sizing up and sizing down reduce image quality. Sizing down you well often end up with a softer/blurry edges result and may have to add some sharpening to compensate for loss of detail.

Thanks everybody for their help and insights!

I'm going to try and go at it tonight. I was trying earlier today and wasn't having much luck. :(

I post my results when I hit payday!

Ok .. and here's what I end up with. I made a boo boo and didn't invert my selection when I was putting a drop shadow and it made it look a bit different.

This is with my mistake of a drop shadow inside the selection

And this one just has the normal drop shadow

Oh yeah the T-1000! I guess it does look like that!

Hey I was a smart guy and saved the curves I used for this. Not sure if they'd be useful to anybody else. I like to share the curves I used but it won't let me attach the exported setting to this thread. =(

Yeah, I gave the txt file a try but it told me at the top in red -> "The extension txt is not allowed." Go figure!

I'll just use the code tags instead. Remember this copy & paste into a file and save it to your curves folder.
