Normally I wouldn't be spamming another site like this, but a lot of us are transplants from GimpTalk and I thought maybe someone had some info as to why it's been down for almost two weeks now. Again, normally, I wouldn't mind that much, but I was helping someone with a project and our only link of communication was through GT. Because of that, I'm kind of desperate for some info about why GimpTalk is down, or if it'll ever come back online.

I'm kind of worried that (for whatever reason) GT is gone for good this time. Do anyone have any information they can share?

Sorry if this seems spamish, but I promised to work on/finish something so it's important that at the very least, I can gather what info I can.

Thanks.

EDIT: On the off-chance that it was just some sort of DNS problem, I did a manual lookup. For anyone interested, here's the response:

It seems clixint.com is gimptalk's current server host, but the entire company seems to be offline. I wonder if these have anything to do the the thousands of seeming random websites the US government recently took down. Maybe it's just a massive fluke, or they're changed some complicated core piece of their system. I dislike idle speculation like this, but I'm at a loss.

Gimp Talk is in sad need of a lot of repairs. It goes down frequently because of that. I've been able to get into it sporadically. It's a shame because there is so much very good information on it.

As far as knowing when it will be back up, I don't know.

I am also very disappointed...i8t would be a good idea make a back-up of the side (at least for the Tuts and the scripts, many were posted only there and are not in the registry

How can we make a backup of the site? Or do the admins have to do that?

You can buy very large external hard drives. Seagate makes a 1.5tb external hd. It's available at Staples.

So it's not down permanently as far as anyone knows? That's good. I just hope that the person I'm helping keeps checking on it and doesn't give up.

Well, I don't know about you guys, but I can try making a text-only backup of GT. I'm not sure how well it'll work, but I've done something similar before. The only problem would be getting permission from all the active members to repost their tutorials.

Also, I'm going to post any tutorials I post on GT, over here too. Maybe soon we can begin migrating ideas and tutorials between the sites. I'm not recommending homogenizing the two, just sharing some good info in-case GT goes down for a long period again.

That's the biggest thing, getting permission to copy them all. =)
If you can contact them at all.

Yeah. I suppose the easiest thing would just be to make a post on GimpTalk encouraging people to repost what they want themselves over here.

GT seems to be down frequently. I hope they get everything fixed soon.

I am so glad that this site is here. I would go nuts without an active gimp site to read. GC had already become my favorite, but I still visited GT, too. I do miss it when it's down.

Hello,

GimpTalk is not permanently down. The admins tell me the reason for the regular issues has been that there have been many, many different sites running on the same server (the admins run a company). Hopefully the current downtime is due to their promised cleanup and update of the server, but I can of course not promise anything, I have no control over this. I can only hope with the rest of you that it will be back up soon again.

I had a feeling it was server related. It's great to know it will be back up again in the future.

I've given up on ever seeing that person who I was helping again. This could last weeks.

I know the feeling Demen. Hopefully the person you are helping will keep on trying to get in, too, and the two of you will meet up later down the line.

I hope they get the site fixed and up and running with the annoyances repaired.

The problem is that we had a deadline. That was last week.

For the couple of days that GT was up, I learned that the deadline was extended a little, but I don't know for how long.

I would hope they would take that into consideration and extend the deadline since no one can post anything anyway.
