I do not know of any books that are free.There is a download pack of nice textures
in this part of the forum. viewtopic.php?f=15&t=485
Other than that there are many, many tutorials for creating your own in GIMP.

There are also free texture creation programs you can download here (Free-Ware)

I've had wood workshop for a few years and genetica viewer for a while, both are worth the download and fun to fool around with.

I have to agree, Spiral Graphics makes some nice programs. =)
I wish i could afford Genetica Studio.
