Weird issues all day. I can browse no problem, but when I try to send an email using the various email accounts I have, it just won't send. When I try to upload even a small image to imageshack, it won't upload. Thinking it might be my PC, I dusted off my laptop (rarely use it; happen to have done so a week ago to get updates after a 6 month hiatus; lol) and same weird issues. Contacted the cable company and they were no help. My gut says it's somehow the cable modems fault but it's still weird that I can download files and browse. Really strange stuff indeed. Maybe you folks might have an idea, but I'm pretty much going to exchange my almost new cable modem tomorrow; just sad since my last cable modem lasted over 5 years before I exchanged it. Just want to vent; sorry for my pouting. lol

It doesn't sound like a modem issue. It sounds like an issue with your ISP and that they may be blocking you from your upstream. Try resetting everything using the unplug technique. If you need to try reassigning a new IP address to your router to attempt a manual redirect of your service. (kinda stick it to your internet provider)

I'm a dumbo; just got off the phone with Charter support again and she suggesting going to speedtest.net (in safemode with networking). Great download speeds, but the upload speed was zero and it failed. I vaguely remember that there was a different mechanism for sending requests then for actually uploading files so that might explain why I can browse but not upload files. Assuming it's still a cable modem issue (did get a few nasty powerdowns last week since my UPS is all but useless now; over 4 years old so time for a new battery, but I usually just get a new UPS). That's why I rent cable modems as opposed to buying them. My last one did last over 4 years though; this one's barely 7 months old. lol

Typing this in Win7 in safemode (scares me since I have no protection; usually use my VM WinXP in Sandboxie). Now I need to reboot. Just wanted to continue with my vent. lol

Maybe they do some confusion so now one of your neighbor is happily downloading/uploading movies 24h/7d from all P2P networks, more and more glad for the connection that become faster and faster..

Not sure I can PC; not controlled by me anyway since I am on cable modem. Still, I believe it is a cable modem issue since I vaguely remember the communication sockets are different for browsing (typeing for that matter) then for uploading files and yes, I tried to upload a file here at GIMPChat too but it wouldn't let me. Still cool that I can at least browse and blog. I guess I could do figlets or asciiart this evening. lol

I power cycled the modem several times Willy. I even left the modem powered down all night and now it still don't work. I know it shows the same shinanagans with my rarely used laptop, so I'm now even more sure it's either the cable or the modem and since I'm able to compose and reply to forums like GIMPChat, I'm nearly sure it's the modem. It could also be some weird issue with Charter, but Charter assured me it's not them. Will, yet again, get a new modem today. Still very frustrating and weird. Might have been wrong with what I said earlier about the difference between uploading and querying though; what I might have been recalling is the difference between browsing and pinging. Still, I bet that querying a request and uploading use a different mechanism too.

yes and the speed may be very different, upload speed is usually lower and never guaranteed except with v pricey contract

Providers often use traffic shaping http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_shaping but if they reserve the right to do or not is a public information:
if you found they COULD do whatever they said about be no responsible, contact them again and ask to check your profile

One of the problems with traffic shaping is that is based on algorithms that may work well (well = only penalizing P2P and users that consume a lot of bandwidth ) in most of cases but not always

Sorry to hear you are having problems Lyle.Usually when i lose bandwidth i unplug the kids (wireless)
Usually it will then jump from downloading at 98kb a sec to 1mb per sec. Kids get upset but oh well.They don't pay the bills.

Well, the new modem fixed the issue (i.e. upload now works). This morning, though, after I was going through the process of getting my new modem connected, an automated message stated that my area was experiencing backbone issues. The question that now needs to be asked is, is this backbone issue the one that I experienced yesterday? lol

At least the new modem works (both upload and download). Happy I am now.
