I am new to using GIMP, liking it very much.
I recently have created some patterns.
I can't seem to name them in the list though.
I re-sized it 100x100
I mapped it seemless
I saved it as a GIMP pattern ie .pat
placed it in my pc folder and check the box to make that folder show up... and it does.
But the pattern has the generic GIMP pattern name
I double click it and type in a new name press enter and it just goes back to the generic name.
Everywhere I have looked suggests it only does that on patterns I haven't added, but I obviously have added it.
Can someone please point out my error here and how I may rectify it?

Any patterns that I make or find, they just have the png, jpg extension. Place them in your pattern folder. C:home/user-name/.gimp-2.6/patterns. This isn't the exact path for Windows, I use Linux Fedora, so it is a bit different. Most of the default ones have the .pat ext. but they all work. Here are some of my patterns below.

That is in fact the folder I use and you are correct by not saving it as .pat and saving it as .PNG it leaves the name and seems to work just as well. Thank you!

When you make a pattern and want to save it, you usually select Save As and enter the Save As dialog box and save your pattern as a .pat file. After you enter the file name at the top, select the file type at the bottom as .pat, there is a second dialog box that comes up once you get past the "Save As" dialog and click Save. This is where you designate the name of your pattern that shows up in the pattern dialog. The default is "gimp pattern" so you have to change it to whatever you want to name it or it will always say Gimp pattern.

If you have been making and saving multiple patterns, the name of the last pattern you made will appear here. Once you close Gimp, it will show up as Gimp pattern again until you change it.

You can also just rename the pattern by browsing to the patterns folder, right clicking the pattern file, and selecting rename.Just be sure to keep the .pat extension the same.

I've done that before and while it changes the name in the folder, it willl still show up as "Gimp pattern" in the Bucket Fill tool dialog until you reopen and resave the pattern and change the name in the second Save dialog box. I think that was what he wanted to fix.

you this pattern naming thing does get annoying...having to name the thing twice...blah

WW, It shouldn't be annoying. It isn't written in stone that your pattern files have to have a .pat extension. They can have png, jpg, gif. I have them all in my folder and they all work.

For what it's worth, the initial question about renaming of patterns in the Patterns dock not working has been a long-standing bug in GIMP.

I agree it should be allowed to at least rename the patterns you have added to the resources folder.
Never did understand why you couldn't do that from the dialog.
The default resources i can understand. You shouldn't have rename edit access to those.
The un installer would probably go haywire.
But anything you add should be name editable (except plugins and scripts that is).
