Are you saving as a jpg? try saving as file extension .png as .jpgs cannot have transparent backgrounds.

This may be a silly question but did you have a white background layer under your transparent text layer? If so, delete that layer.

When you save as a PNG, did you also remember to uncheck the "save background color" box?

Got it... you have a floating selection head to the layer mask of the top layer. To save properly, you have to

  1. anchor the floating selection, which puts it on the layer mask
  2. apply the layer mask

At that point you can save with transparency...

Thanks again for your help, and ask for some explanation of these words.
I used this Bulgarien GIMP tutorial and so far no problems, but obviously something do wrong

right click on layer, at the bottom there is an anchor, :anchor, click that and your floating layer will turn into a layer. right click again on the layer and on the drop down menu it will say apply layer mask, click that.

When you do a paste, the pasted pixels aren't directly applied on a layer/mask, but appear as a transient layer called the floating selection (so that they can be moved to another part of the image or dscaled/rotated/sheared...). You have to "commit" the paste by either "anchoring" the FS (which paints it on the active layer), or by creating a new layer from it. When you paste on a layer mask, you can only anchor to the layer mask.
