No need. Font Maker automatically installs a font that allows you to create your own knotwork. You just have to work out which letter corresponds to which shape.

Here's another free open source java program: Because of malware being found in SourceForge downloads, this link has been removed.
You have just four basic shapes to choose from that you can easily manipulate and re-design using a right-click menu.
