Partha would be the one to ask about 64 bit. :)

Rod,

Your build is available on gimp.org? I couldn't find it. Can you give me the URL?

Thanks!
Partha

The official installer is out: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

I read here http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2403965,00.asp
Quote:
But there's a catch: the GTK+2 image toolkit that was used to create GIMP 2.8 is not compatible with graphics tablets like Wacom, so those that use a graphics tablet will have to downgrade to version 2.6, the developers said.

Anyone know if this is true? I'll have to stick with 2.6 if there is no tablet support :(

Yeah; saw, I believe at GIMPUsers that someone complained about the lack of tablet support Rob. For the life of me, I still don't understand why the developers feel that 2.6x has to be uninstalled too; just finished re-installing 2.6.12 (and yes, 2.8 works perfectly fine with 2.6.12 installed and can be run simultaneously if you know the secret too. lol). Only difference between rc1 and the official release is the TIF bug is fixed. Actually, someone here (think it might have been Graechan, but I'm not sure; may have been Onkel too) found a workaround for the TIF bug so I really gained nothing upgrading to 2.8 official release other then an extremely cool splash screen. :)

L i believe that are not the developers but a idea of who made the builds

Bad idea in my opnion and even worse is trying to import preference from the previous version..that make sense for minor upgrade not when come a new milestone

So to install both versions you just installed 2.8 in different path than 2.6 like this
2.6= C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.0
2.8= C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.8

Just an example the 2.8 makes new folder in user data I assume (.gimp-2.6 ,an new .gimp-2.8 ) ?

The release notes talks of environment variables but i checked mine an nothing is in path line

That's right Ed. In my case, 2.6 installed in program files(x86) and 2.8 in program files (since I went 64-bit with 2.8). 2.6 uses .gimp2.6 and 2.8 uses .gimp2.8 in my user profile directory. Still, it's going to be a pain to have to uninstall 2.6 each time I install a 2.8 upgrade, but do I will until all the bugs get eliminated and all my scripts and plugins work in 2.8. I figure 2.8.3 will be the golden release; hope 2.8.2 will though (just based on my past experiences with releases; the rest usually are more addressing very specific (and sometimes esoteric) bugs). :)

Maybe I'll wait for portable 2.8 to come out, as I've got my 2.6 installation doing everything I need it to do tight now...

Lyle I just installed on my computer it gave me no choice where it was installing and it replaced my 64bit 2.8rc1 install in program file dir leaving my old 2-6-11 install in program files (x86) untouched ?, it's a strange installer.

If so "strange" seems a very polite euphemism :roll:

I did a custom install so I put it in GIMP2.8 directory (as opposed to default 2.0 directory) in program files. It still insisted to uninstall 2.6 though. Extremely strange why your install process kept 2.6 while custom install does not. Oh well; happy with how I installed it and I just re-installed 2.6; user directory for 2.6 is still left untouched so 2.6 pops up like nothing happened when I launch it. :)

my 2-6-11 is in program files(x86) GIMP-2.0, while my 64bit Gimp2.8rc1 was in program files GIMP 2

does this mean my 2.8 from the installer is 64bit I'm confused , how can I tell if It's definitely 64bit

No Graechan; I did a custom install so I was able to choose the name for where I wanted GIMP 2.8 to be and I chose GIMP2.8 as the name for the directly. If you did an auto-install you had no choice. Apparently with auto-install, it doesn't un-install 2.6 though. Definitely weird. :)

Graechan check to see if the gimp-2.6.exe is still there. ;)
Mine did the same thing.
It un installed gimp-2.6.12 (leaving my gimp-2.0 folder)
It un installed Gimp-2.8-RC-1 entirely.

PC i think it copies the gimp-2.6 folder because it does support older plug-ins.
Any NEW version that supports my gimp older version plugins is welcome to copy it.BUT i prefer it delete the old gimp-2.6 folder. :lol

That's what doesn't make sense to me.It keeps the old gimp-2.6 resource folder.
Maybe because it knows you will re install gimp-2.6.12? :)

My 2-6-11 in program files (x86) is untouched, it removed 2-8rc1 from program files and replaced with 2-8 and kept all user 2.8 files
