It's so strange that the Gimp team would release 2.8 when there are things broken with it. Weird way of doing things.

It's a GTK+ problem not a Gimp problem. Not much they can do, can they? :)

Rod, You can't be using both within Gimp. Which are you using for your build?

I am using libtiff-3

Here is a screenshot of my installed gimp-2.8 (developers)

As you can see, both are there. :)

I suppose not. But for folks like me, not versed in programming & stuff like that, (the majority of Gimpers) there should be a warning of the things that will no longer work.

Things like this won't scare me away personally, but for others, it might.

That said, I love the program, and eagerly await the next version which hopefully is released with a working GTK, or whatever magic it is that enables pressure support :)

Thanks Rod, but I think that Gimp build that you are using is actually running on libtiff-3.dll. Tiff 4.0.x does not work with Gimp and I've not solved that issue. So, I reverted to Tiff 3.9.4. I guess the official version is doing the same.

Looks like it as i used 3 for my build.
It runs really good (no crashes)
Just a problem with that libintl-8.dll file still. :)
Someday i will rename all but the one in the gimp/bin folder and create a path to it.
OR
Is it possible to just update the profile file with an export LD_LIBRARIES_PATH: and point to the opt/bin folder for it?

Depending on the version of gcc you are using, the issue is using the version with gtk and the one with mingw. So, while building Gimp, use the modifier --disable-gtktest. Then while packaging Gimp, use the libintl-8.dll from the gtk/bin directory.

Let me know if that does not work.

Lyle,
I got LabCurves working with 2.8 32bit. I tested, xcf, jpg, png, tif. Are you still having problems?

There is a clear warning in the release note , where is suggested to graphic tablet users to stick with gimp 2.6

i must delude you, the fix is planned not before gimp-2.10 (but more luckily gimp 3.0)
That at the current development speed would be 2 or 3 years from now (double for gimp 3.0)

and yes i too think that is very , very bad

As far i understand some tablet will still sort of work but is not guaranteed

PC you must have faith. :lol
The releases should come much quicker now. especially with most of Gimp ported to GEGL already.
Next will probably be port the rest to GEGL and use GTK-3
That's when everything (old plug-ins), will break. ;)

I have yet to test my HanWang tablet. :)
I will test it Sunday and let you know the results. So far my HanWang has worked in all versions.

This has already started. The goat-invasion branch and the main branch were merged. Now, the main branch is theoretically able to open 16-bit files. I will let you know the state-of-affairs, when I compile the git version.

@Rod

Well my old prevision on the release time of gimp 2.8 was almost exact

In this case i don't understand why to fix a bug in gtk it is needed wait till gimp-3.0 release
but if is so i would not be too optimistic for the time needed

The new version of 2.8 for windows requires a processor with SSE support to install, so it can't be used on older machines.

@Partha
Can you make your build with SSE optional?

I will try. I just finished wrestling with a problem that prevents Gimp from running. So, now I am in a position to get my builds out. :)

@PhotoComix

Well, doggone it! I see that there's a kind of warning now. Thanks for pointing it out :)

It could be a long time until some of the bugs are ironed out it appears. Is the tablet limitation also present in the Linux version of 2.8?

And I also want to thank you, as well as Rod, Partha and the many others who patch, compile & make scripts for Gimp. I'm grateful for all you all do. Cheers!

I should also say, my tablet that locks up gimp while attempting to enable it is a Wacom Intuos4 on Win XP. Just so others who also have a similar setup can know what to expect.

Grant_M,
I installed 2.8 on a separate install of Gentoo Linux.
I have a Wacom BambooPT 2FG 4x5 tablet.
My gimp-2.8.0 was installed with the gtk+-2.24.10-r1 library.
As you can see from the screenshot it works ok.

bilbo9955,
In Gentoo Linux packages (programs) are installed with a script called "ebuild".
I checked the one for gimp-2.8.0 and it had the sse flag set.
However you can disable flags on the command line or in a config. file.
I tried the install command for gimp with the sse flag unset and it didn't complain.
(Of course I used pretend).
This is the "ebuild" for gimp-2.8.0 in Gentoo
It's like a recipe to tell the compiler what to include etc.

Thanks, Gerard. I might give it a shot on a clean Ubuntu install & test it out. Good info :)

If I can't get it working there, maybe I'll give Gentoo a look too
