Yet again another modular Gmic "Artistic" filter for Gmic ,codename "Phoenix Steam_Pencil"
explaned here

Image
gui2 by PhotoComiX, on Flickr

the yellow frame contain the control for the first module , for a BW draw effect
in the red frame show the option to exit with the BW, or switch on the Colors module to merge the BW with the colors from the original
In the green frame the Color module with option for chose a merging mode ,opacity and reverse layers
To better explain the filter i will use this imagine

Image
Portrait of a young musician (IMG_7398a) by Alaskan Dude, on Flickr

########################################################################

It has 2 mode BW and COLORS (toggle is framed in red in the screenshot)

With the BW mode "Phoenix Steam_Pencil is a variation on the Pencil theme...
The difference is in "Steam" (a combination of Kuwahara and gaussian blur ) the lower the value used For "Steam" the more subtle is the effect on pencil, the higher the values the more Pencil will be modified and simplified , and result my resemble less the original and become more and more abstract
In between you may found an interesting range where the effect become a sort of hybrid between pencil and sponge

IMAGES ARE MORE CLEAR :"STEAM" to Minimum

Slightly raising "STEAM" values

This was BW, the other mode , COLORS alllows to combine the BW with the original color:
for the examples i used the same setting used for 2nd BW image , but enabling Colors

the first 3 options Value, Lighness ,Luminosity would do it literally, even if each with its logic ( even if apparently similar as concept , results are not equivalent)

This is Lightness

(Value instead will looks darker, and Luminosity a bit different for color rendition )

the following 3 mode Dark-Edges, Vivid-Edges and Vivid Screen were created for the occasion...just see if you like them
(the first 2 are based on gmic edge mode , Vivid Screen is a darker and more saturated variant of Screen )

VIVID SCREEN

[G'MIC] PhotoComix Steam-Pencil ; -gimp_c_spp3 0.95,14,2,2,0.9,1,0,5,1,0 by PhotoComiX, on Flickr

VIVID EDGES

Image
[G'MIC] PhotoComix Steam-Pencil ; -gimp_c_spp3 0.95,14,3,3,0.9,1,0,4,1,0 by PhotoComiX, on Flickr

The other...well each correspond to a know layer merging mode so to a different mode to combine our BW with the colors from the original...
Sure 18 different merging mode may seems a overkill but on the other hand they assure a lot of power and flexibility here few random examples

PS about the additional colormodes
Dark_Edges=output gmic edges + its dup -merged in Multiply mode
Vivid_edges =output gmic edges + its dup -merged in Grain Merge mode
Vivid Screen=output Screen + its dup - merged in Grain Merge mode

EDIT : Refresh filter i just upload a new version

You may consider a experimental version , mainly because as now may not respect transparency and multiple calls

For some reason the snippet of code that i never understand but i always use as was Mantra to avoid problem with Alpha and multiple Input/Output in this case refuse to do its Magic...i will need the help of some guru (... David ...could you hear me? ) to fix it

Anyway is quite powerful, fexible and fun to use

I'm running Gimp 2.6.11 on a Windows 7 machine with 8gb ram. I wrote in another thread that I am getting a preview error for the Kuwahara and Lylejk's painting filters, and I noticed I'm getting the same error with your filter.
In addition, I get the following error message when I try to run the filter:

*** Error in ./gimp_phoenix/gimp_kuwahara/../_apply_channels/*repeat/kuwahara/*repeat/ *** [_cimg_math_parser] gmic<float>::fill() : Invalid item '0,1' in specified expression 'v1=i(x-1,y-1,0,1,0,1)'.

Does this mean anything to you? I'm a novice when it comes to such things, and so I have no clue what it is referring to.

yes i may guess what happened, the Gmic developer changed something in one of his filters and that broke the others that were somehow dependent

Alas as now i am very busy, the only quickly fix would be use a older version of gmic,
... or contact the gmic developer here http://www.flickr.com/groups/gmic/discuss/ he may know a quick solution

for a week or so i may be unable to look further to the problem, but if could not be solved before bump up this topic again in a week or so, so i will remember (i have a very bad memory, better you remind me )

Rod i believe David changed something in the Kuwahara filter, (or in some gmic commands used by the kuwahara filter)

Should not be hard to fix but again today i am too busy, and i may be too busy for a few days

yes is the David Kuwahara filter to be broken and that caused a sort of chain reaction, domino effect or how you prefer to call it

i am advising David of the problem
Also most of Karo filters seems to be broken

more details and maybe a fix coming here

Does Lyle's Painting use this filter? I'm having the same problem with it.

Erisian,
Yes, Lyle's painting filter uses Kuwahara. So, the issue seems to all be related.

yes that is a filter from the gmic developer so can't be modified by others.
if somebody else will fix he could only place the fixed version in its own filter source and that will not solve for the other filters involved

Just wanted to let everyone know that Ronounours has updated the G'mic plug in order to fix the preview and other errors mentioned earlier in this thread. The update can be downloaded from here:
