Yay!! :jumpclap

I'm sitting here with my finger on the download button. :pengy

The Linux Gurus from "The Linux Action Show" over at Jupiter did a review of F17. In the past, their opinions of Fedora haven't always been that favorable but for the most part, they give the Fedora 17 a big :bigthup

While they are frequently wrong and totally off base, they are kinda entertaining...

I'm jealous!!! !6 didn't work for me but I might just give 17 a spin for the hell of it. It might work - stranger things have happened.

Tried Gimp 2.8 in Wine?

Btw, Gimp 2.8 in Windows seems to have its share of problems....

No I haven't tried it in Wine. I love Fedora, I have had very excellent results there.

Why not just compile your own gimp? I've had gimp 2.8 for my ubuntu from the day the source was released... there's a great tutorial for compiling gimp over at gimpusers, makes it a trivial task really.

I have no idea how to compile. I also know if I try messing around with it, I will end up with no Fedora and back in windows.. I am just not techie inclined. thanks anyway.

I got as far as downloading it onto a disk and I burned the iso onto a disk. From there I will wait to find out what to do next. Anyway, I am sure looking forward to it.

GIMP 2.8 requires newer versions of babl and gegl packages not included with F16 or below. Of course, you could compile the newer versions of those as well. To satisfy GIMP 2.8 dependencies under Fedora 16, you'll need to compile (or acquire) the following version (or better) of the following packages..

babl-0.1.10
gegl-0.2.0
gobject-introspection-1.31.22
gtk+-2.24.10
pygobject-2.21.3
pygtk-2.24.0

Most Fedora users didn't bother to compile since the release of F17 was imminent (slipped a few weeks though).

Yes it's me here with some dumb, stupid, well totally rediculous questions, Well here goes.
I have win7 on C:/ drive and My F:/ drive (a usb conected 36gb hard drive fom my old laptop) is empty

1/ Could I install Fedora 17 on my F:/ drive without interfering with Windows?
2/ Is this forum able to cope with dumb questions on using Gimp in Linux by me?
Well those 2 Questions were as short and acurate as I could make them

I'm not sure if fedora is the best distro for you if you're new to linux...

Graechan,
Tux will be a better one to answer your question on installing Fedora onto Drive F: but as far as Fedora not being the best distro for a person new to Linux, I don't agree.
I have never used Linux in my life and I am using Fedora and I love it. I have not not had one problem with it so far and as far as Gimp, it runs the same in Fedora as it does in Windows or anywhere else.

Graechan - If you use Lili ( http://www.linuxliveusb.com/ ) you can create a bootable live version of Fedora but this is unuseable as an OS - it's just a demo and installation stick. However it appears to give an option to install within windows like Wubi does with Ubuntu. This way you get a fully featured OS that can just be uninstalled if you don't like it or if you decide you want it on a partition. You still boot into it as a separate OS.

I have to agree with Molly on this. I found Fedora just as user friendly as Ubuntu - in fact I found it easier in some ways. I'm not a technically minded person so if I can use it, I'm sure Graechan can.

Yes.
1. Download the iso and burn it on a disk if you have a disk drive.
2. Choose a live-CD to minimize download time. Remember "burn" on a disk and not copy.
3. Put the disk into your drive and reboot. While rebooting, make sure that in your BIOS setup, booting from a disk-drive is first on the list. Fedora will start to boot. Follow the screens carefully.
4. Once you see the screen about "storage" pay careful attention to which drive Fedora will be installed on. Choose your removable drive.
5. When your installation is over, eject the disk and reboot.
6. This time around, make sure that in your BIOS your first boot device is your removable hard-drive.
7. After Fedora boots, answer a couple of questions and you are good to go.
8. Before you do anything, make sure to run software update so that you have all the latest bug/security fixes.

I would propose a slightly different installation strategy. As Partha suggests, download and burn an installation CD (or DVD). Reboot your computer and enter the BIOS settings (usually accessed by pressing DEL or F12 during reboot).

In the BIOS settings, disable your C:\ drive; this should be the "primary master" device. Set your "First Boot Device" to your CDROM drive, insert your installation disk, and reboot.

The Fedora installer should take over your computer and you should follow through all of the instructions. Your Windows drive should be totally ignored by the installer (since you've disabled it).

After you've completed the installation, reboot your computer and enter the BIOS settings yet again. Enable your Windows drive (the Primary Master) and set your "Boot Order" to: 1: USB device 2: Hard drive.

With this setup, if your USB drive is plugged then you will boot to Fedora. If it is not plugged in then you will boot to Windows.
