Gimp-2.9

I installed Gimp-2.9 on yet another different install.
It's still called goat invasion but the splash image has changed.
Haven't done much testing yet.

This,as always,is from git.gnome.org Rod.
I don't think there are any tarballs yet.
So far I got everything working except printing with gutenprint.
I get an error about "direction" which I never had before.
And the sluggishness is still there.

And one thing is worrying (Ubuntu 64 bit):
In mode Precision 16/32bit integer GMIC and UserFilter does not work ...
From my favorite (in these modes) only works MathMap - but much more slowly

What's the difference between 2.8 and 2.9? I'm guessing that it only comes in linux too.

2.9 will eventually become 3.0.
It's available as "git"sources so you can compile it for any platform you want.
Linux,Mac,Windows just compile it for those and make sure you have all the libraries like gtk and python for instance.
Of course Linux is easiest since it comes with those libs by default.

As of now, but it should (according to the devs) be released on all three. PC, mac, and linux.

Yes i grabbed it with GIT Bash but decided i will just wait for a release for windows.

Unfortunately, this is not true.

2.9 will become 2.10 which is the high-bit precision version. Version 3.0 will be released after that and it will incorporate gtk+-3.0.

My last 2 compiles of gimp-2.9 were incredibly slow.
I know now why.

Tried again today.
It now is more or less usable.
Color management slows it down a little.
I also installed "ufraw" which I use to load raw images from my camera.
Apparently the ufraw-gimp plugin needs to be rewritten to allow more than 8 bits/px and
I got an error message from gimp about using insert_new layer_instead of what ufraw used.

Hi Gerard,

I have not been able to get Gimp 2.9 to work at all. I should clarify. I just built Gimp from git after seeing your latest post. Built, installed, tried to open 16-bit tiff. Instant crash. So, it's not usable to me. All digital cameras produce either RAW or tiff or RAW Editors to tiff. So, if tiff is not usable, then 2.9 is not ready for photography usage for me. Have you been able to open 16-bit tiffs?

Hi partha,
I didn't have any 16 bit tiffs on hand so I used rawtherapee to make one from an RW2 file (Panasonic).
I saved it and opened it in gimp-2.9 w/o any problem.
I checked Image > Precision and it showed 16 bit integer allright.
Of course we are on different OS's which might make a difference.

Edit: Apparently there's something going on.
I found the following message from gimp in konsole (where I started gimp-2.9)
