I really really really want this script but I don't know how to insert it and where. It is a .mm file which I don't understand what folder to put it in, how to open it... and do I need Python for it or will it work without it?
Could someone please explain it to me... in detail because I am new at this, just a beginner.
Thankyou please.

The MathMap installer places all expressions or mm files in the mathmap\expressions folder in subfolders.
The mathmap folder itself should be in your UserName\gimp-2.8 folder
In Parthas portable it should be in the Pref_1 folder.
By the way the newest installer places those scripts in the mathmap\expressions folder for you so just install that and you should be able to go to Filters>Generic>MathMap
Hope that helps.

Yes that is helpful Rod! :)
I downloaded Mathmap and it installed well into the folder. (Gimp 2.6) and will check it out tomorrow.
But... I looked everywhere and could not find it anywhere in Gimp so your info of
Filters>Generic>MathMap really helped thanks Rod!

Regardless of it's name, you don't need to know any maths. It's all sliders and tick boxes.

The nice thing about MathMap are it's clickable node type filter creation tools. :)
Image

This in my opinion is how all graphics programs should behave.
Then right click any node to set up that particular node, or adjust it's parameters.
Then if you want to remove the behavior just delete the node. Non destructive in all aspects.

You could even set up layers as nodes.Layer modes and the like.

Agree with you Rod; node editing is the future of how we all will edit. You truly will have non-destructive (hate the term lossless) editing using this type of flow too. There was discussion at GIMPUsers that said gegl will allow node editing ability; we shall see. I have a cool program called PostworkShop Pro that can also use node editing and really find it cool. I use to be and electrical engineer and there was a program I used often enough called Labview which is pretty much spot on to node editing. Simulink (a MATLAB nodel interface) was my first introduction to node editing back in the late 1990s. Once you get use to doing things this way, you will appreciate it's power. You can even re-use workflows quite easily once you create a node model. How cool is that. Just like legos (well, you still have to interconnect the blocks with wires; lol). :)

I agree. MathMap, Filter Forge 3 Pro, and MapZone, are a just a few of my favorites. :)

Do mean have Gimp layers as inputs to filters within composer, if so how do you do this?

I'm using the Windows Plugin version of MM btw and can only get it to use one input image, am I missing a trick?

I'm not sure if this is what your looking but it will demonstrate some cool features of MathMap.
In Gimp open two images with multiple layers (no indexed images).
In MathMap =>Filters =>Compositing, select (for example) Mix or In or Multiply.
After each filter selection hit Preview.
Go to the User Value tab and pick an image or layer to use.
In Composer use a combination of them and link them.

That's exactly what I was looking for :)
I'd seen lots of filters which require multiple images to work on but couldn't figure out how to make the extra images available to MM. I'd ended up assuming maybe it was something only the standalone version could do via image wells or something similar. Hadn't considered having more than one image open in Gimp - doh.

Thanks for the tip!

Here's two images, each with the same and each with different filters applied, combined and animated with MathMap.

Cheers folks :)
I wish I could remember all the steps or saved the expression. I first noticed the animation script at the MathMap web site. It's the one by Herbert Poetzl; included with MathMap, "Animated Sphere".

i believe that is just "sphere" manually animated

the "animated sphere" code is by Joseph Summers and was never included as default in MM (it is in my extra -expression pack )

actually there are 2 versions of animated sphere the original from J Summers (still i want thank him , it was a my request) and a tweaked version i did

not sure which i included in the pack, the difference is that...i introduced a bug that allow some more interesting effects:

basically while the original code allow to chose rotation from 0° to 360° my version allow rotations from -360° to 360
may seems that negative rotations have no sense but the hack worked as i hoped; what fails under a negative ° it is not computed , and in pratice this allow to create spheres that progressively appear or vanish

Image

now with setting from big to small and anymation set to combine (NOT replace !)

Image

The 2 effect combined
