Partha, I will try to get more filters used tonight, but until the color picker works, I don't thinks it's totally ready for prime time because that's sort of a basic function.
Pauline, all I did was download Partha's 2.8, twice as the first time failed because of my dsl I think, and it unzipped itself and loaded up into the applications and put an icon on my dock. All automatic! I had taken out old versions, and only kept my 2.6 that shows up as Gimp in the files, and this new one shows up as Gimp 2.8. It took a while for the initial start up but now comes up fairly quickly and works fine. I am on Snow Leopard and I think you are on Lion, I don't know if that makes a difference. I haven't checked yet if I can put in new scripts or plug-ins...maybe tonight I can try, but G'Mic seems to work fine and I think I even got it to update but not sure as I just updated without checking the numbers first.

Yes I read that thanks ...
I havent been about for a while but trying to get back into it now

@Partha...I would love to try out the McGimp! What all does it come loaded with? Hopefully G'Mic since I have forgotten how I installed it! Also, I have Snow Leopard, it that makes a difference.

you load it exactly the same as the previous version I believe
via /Users/yourhomefolder/Library/Application Support/Gimp/plug-ins

Please don't do that. :(

G'MIC is included in my build.

Thanks Partha

just quick note about running a filter or two...I ran resynth on one of the D80 sample photos.. at 7360x4912 size. used default settings. It took approx 40mins to complete. This with my OS on external Sata HD and flipping between Gimp and my web browser as it did it's thing.

Same pic but running the G'mIc filter ellipsionism (spelling?) took a long time and never completed (I had to bail, but the computer went to sleep at one point and am thinking the job was somehow lost. I didn't see any hd activity)...I waited about 6 hours. I know from past testing that filter takes a long time to compute. So I chose it to test the file size. For another jpg, I used a file roughly 960x940? I was done in a few mins.

I'll try other filters later, but I for sure wanted to see how that ellipsionism filer worked on the monster file from nikon. Tomorrow or next day, I'll look at other filter on same nikon jpg.

Take care...have a great day!

Thanks WW!! Try using Gegl plugins which is the future anyway and most of these plugins will have to be rewritten.

Looks like some of these filters/plugins also will have to be optimized for the D800 or any medium format camera (that is pixel count greater than 30 megapixels). I am not sure it will be any faster on an Linux system. If anyone wants to test, please post your numbers here.

Wait, you don't see GMIC in my version? Maybe your previous version got copied into your local application support folder? Can you check that and if so, please delete the older version that is in the ~/Library/Application Suport/Gimp-2.8/themes/

Partha -

Crash Log is attached (converted to pdf file to allow attachment). Hope this helps!

This seems to be an issue on the Mac itself from my understanding and after googling, the standard advice almost always is to run the Mac disk utility or run in safe mode to see if there are other issues with the machine.

Thanks Akky! :)
Coming from you it means a lot. Please test further and let me know if you have any issues.

Also, you will notice a whole bunch of plugins (primarily my "Useful Plugins" collection) are preloaded and the User does not have to mess with any systems settings. :)

partha, I really like the look and feel of McGimp. And I appreciate all of your work. you have done a great job ...One of the first things I have noticed is that the fonts have previously automatically been in alphabetical order by title. I'm not sure that is happening at the moment and also previously, GIMP seemed to automatically pick up all of the fonts from my font book and I could randomly choose them at will via the GIMP. Would you have an alternative method for using these or a suggestion as to how to add them and how to get them in alhpabetical order please. I'm spending a bit of time trying to add them myself but as yet it hasnt happened...I'll let you know if I find a way.

Right folks I found a way to add your font book fonts to McGimp. Not sure how many of the mac users here are aware that you have a font book and if so that you can add and delete endless fonts to & from it if you so wish...previously, the GIMP automatically picked up the fonts from there for you to use. With this version you need to add your favorites from the font book. So the steps you need to take I will put in here.

you need to open your font book from the applications folder to see the list.
next you need to actually physically remove your favorite fonts from there by using the edit/remove options. This will place them into the trash can. From there if you wish you can place them in a folder on your desktop for now. Just be careful not to empty your trash can at this point.

Open your home folder…that is..the little house icon…and follow this path

/Users/yourhomefoldername/Library/Application Support/Gimp-2.8/fonts

then add the fonts to this font folder.
once you have done that, if you click on the fonts you can re add them to the fontbook and they will no longer be in the trash.

Its a bit of a round about way to do it but it is working for me. All I have to do now is figure how to get them into alphabetical order in McGimp.

Restart McGimp….or refresh the fonts on McGimp. You will find them in the fonts there…I think its a good practice to get into restarting GIMP when you add things to it but thats just my OCD kicking in.

Akky, There is a glib bug report out there about alphabetical listings which has been a mess recently. For example while using the mac version of the Linux editor Gedit, if you try to sort by name, it sorts them by the number of characters in the filename!

As for the fonts, they should have all been automatically picked up by Gimp. While building Gimp, I pick up all Systems related fonts. Do you not see any system fonts at all? Are you talking about a specific location for your fonts? In that case, it may be a little more tricky and I have to research a little bit more. You can of course add the location of the font folder in your preferences within Gimp.

I didnt need to direct the McGIMP to the location of the new fonts...they just appeared when I refreshed...the other thing is that I advised to delete the fonts fromt he font book...you cant delete the system fonts at all...theoretically anyway...so it will only happen with added fonts.
