I am having more trouble than I care to deal with in Gimp 2.8. After a couple of adjustments or whatever to any project, Gimp becomes a bug ridden pain in the rear. It becomes impossible to choose any of my tools. I have to go to filters and choose something like Gaussian Blur then press cancel before I can choose a new tool. At first, when this started happening, I would have to save/export the image to be able to click on a new tool. But I eventually figured out I just needed to choose a filter (but cancel before applying) in order to choose a new tool.

I have spent more time than I care to searching for a fix. If anyone has heard of this and knows how I can fix without going back to 2.6, I would appreciate the help. Though if there is no fix, I would equally appreciate help downgrading back to 2.6.

No need to downgrade; just re-installe 2.6 and make sure the executable is in a separate directory then your 2.8 install (i.e., custom install). Both can co-existed; just not run simultaneously (unless you know the not so secret).

I don't understand why you would want to downgrade.
I keep a portable 2.6 and a portable 2.8 on my machine.
Parthas portable Gimp-2.8 works real well.

I don't think this has changed since 2.8... I can still have several filter dialogs open and still interact with the Toolbox in my 2.7. Maybe you had a setting in 2.6 that you didn't carry over to 2.8 (Edit/Preferences/Window management)?

I do have to add that the transition between 2.6 32-bit to 2.8 64-bit was the easiest GIMP trasition ever. I still remember that 1.2.4 to 2.0, the 2.2 to 2.4 (believe that was when the Script-fu requirements changed; my feeble mind can't remember. lol) and the 2.4. to 2.6 were near disasters. lol

I think many people could avert disasters if they just uninstall gimp-2.6.12 and move its userfolder before installing gimp-2.8. Then just reinstall gimp-2.6.12 and replace the userfolder.
This allows for a FRESH install with no added resources or tool options, and preferences.
Load Gimp and set your preferences for dialogs, and shut down.
Then just add them as you need them (resources).

I keep 2.6 and 2.8 and as Lyle said, they can both live happily together. I like 2.8 better but I can't get mathmap to work on it and pspi doesn't work on it. But there is no need to abandon one for the other.

They should both work GMS; there's thread on how to do this but don't feel like searching this but you can too. Mathmap was the only reason why I was going to postpone installing 2.8 until Graechan figured out how to get it to work. PSPI just works down outright. If you are using 32-bit version of 2.8, you might want to PM Rod as to how to get these plugins to work in 2.8 (use 64-bit myself).

I thought they should work on both but it only shows up on 2.6 even though I've installed it in both folders. It isn't a big deal.
