Someone started a thread at DPR about turning your Vision into a photo and I remembered this cool program from a few years back. Thought you all would be interested too.

i believe was blocked by irresolvable copyright problems

not in the code but would be impossible to use without violating some image copyright

even if would be possible restrict the search of the immage to use to CC, would remain impossible trace and credit the authors of each of the many pieces used in the composition

i seen US government went so mad about copyright protection to send FBI to close places as megaupload, use this cool program without violating images copyright seems impossible

(the beta was using image search engine (as google image) to search the images)

I think you are right PC; tried to go to their website and it's completely dead. Just plain sad. Oh well. Maybe it will come back when people realize that online images should be open source unless you try to make a profit from someone elses images (that's where I draw the line).

They could tie up with stock photo companies (who would welcome the business), just search their databases and ensure you purchase the required rights to any source pictures before being able to download the assembled montage from sketch2photo's server?

It is not much question to pay ,many image are free, but the problem i see is for the credit.

a photomontage may require dozens of photo, give for each author name, website and original image url would be just a nightmare

And i believe if many may like share very few like their work used without notice or credit

But even if, by absurd the program would be able to capture not only the images but even the credits (original image name and url, author name, type of licence...a standard thank...) the list would be so long to not enter in a normal image comment

It ought to be made possible to use your own photos. I think that the business of giving credit is often impractical and it should be a case of not taking credit yourself. If somebody insists on getting credit it's just an ego thing. As long as I don't claim somebody's work as my own and don't make a profit out of it that should be enough.
