I've tried it on six computers and it crashed or just shut down on it's own on all six. Each computer was a different brand with different guts, some were XP, three were 7 professional and one was Linux Mint. I finally switched to smplayer, based on Rod's recommendation. VLC had a skin that that I really liked too.

I forget, can I download the update and it will overwrite my current vlc program or do I need to dump the old one first?

Shouldn't be a problem installing over. It worked for me in Windows.

I am on a mac, but I'll go for it.

*so I get something called a disk image on my desktop. No idea why but when I open it, it works. I guess I should move it into my applications folder, my desktop is cluttered enough.

Yes, it will automatically uninstall your old version....Don't forget though to install you need to right click and run as administrator.

Just got the update in my software repository. VLC has the best features and is the most stable video player I've ever used. It just keeps getting better. I never have to worry about finding codecs and it will even play a video inside a .rar while the rar is downloading. I also love all the resizing/scaling/aspect ratio options, along with the easy audio to video syncing features.

I totally agree. I have never seen a video player I liked better. It has its own built in Codecs and it has a very good reputation.

so I noticed that I had not only the disk image of the new one, but the old one, too. I trashed the old one as well as the icon on my dock. I cannot figure out how to get it as an app in my folder, but it still works as a disk image...can you tell I have no idea what I am doing? For some reason, the workings of the mac seem invisible to me, whereas I could usually tell what was happening with my pc files.

I thought the disk image thing sounded funny. I was thinking of like iso's. I looked it up and apparently it's a common thing for software distrubtion for Macs. I know nothing about Macs. I had to use them at school years ago and didn't like it.

Whilst we are on the subject of this brilliant player I would like to ask why some of my FLV format Vid icons are in filmstrip with cone in corner and others are just a large cone...I believe it is something to do with codecs but I thought the player supported FLV?

hah, I finally was able to get rid of all the early vlc's and now just have the newest one. It's all such a mystery to me on the mac and I have to futz around until I stumble on the right process by accident. But I still love the mac, I have had it almost 2 years and it hasn't slowed down a nanosecond. The new VLC looks like it's a great improvement, I should try to use it more.
