Crap...I moved the original mcgimp folder the desktop and downloaded this new one. It's labeled gimp-1 app. I took it from downloads and put it in the applications...but it won't open. so I put it on my dock, still won't open. I need a mac experts help!!!

* I tried putting it on my desktop...nada. so I put it back on the dock until I figure something out. Both other gimps were no problem, not sure why I can't do this one. So not only can I NOT open the new McGimp, but I cannot open the first McGimp anymore either. Argh. I'm going to go fix dinner and maybe tonight I will trash both the mcgimps and start over and hopefully have more luck. This is the one thing that annoys me about osx...no transparency. In windows it is easy to see where everything is and how to move it, in OSX, more is hidden so I cannot improvise.

2-ton,

When you unzip it, if it finds another Gimp.app in the same location, Mac will name it to Gimp-1.app.

Here is what you do:

Move Gimp-1.app to /Applications.
Rename this Application to Gimp.app
Now double click on it.

I will wait online for you in case it does not work. :)

But if I rename this new one to gimp.app, will it not conflict with the gimp.app that is already there? I already have a gimp.app in the applications folder....it is my 2.6. where shall I put that one? Also, I cannot unzip, it automatically unzips itself. I did not have this problem with the original mcgimp...it named itself gimp 2.8 so it did not conflict with my gimp app (2.6)

I didn't know you still had 2.6! :)

Anyway, can you use the finder to compress the old McGimp (or delete it) and then unzip the new one on your desktop and use it from there?

OK, I will try the desktop. I did get rid of the first mcgimp because I won't need it, but I hope I can go back into the trash and dig out some of the brushes and scripts. Anyway, stay tuned, I'm going to move the new folder, and rename it, and see if that works.

*edit...ok, yay, I can open from desktop..first time it pulled some big error and said to try to reopen and it would send some error message to Apple. so I reopened and it worked. I will be trying out the gmic today, and also, are there other folders besides desktop that would be a good place to stash this? I try to keep my desktop somewhat clear.

**...looks like the gmic is working fine...but, the whole mcgimp, including and especially mcgimp, seems much slower than the first mcgimp, and I get the dreaded beachball of death at almost every gmic filter that I try out. Luckily, it does't last too long, but the original mcgimp rarely ever caused the beachball to show up.

***I meant to say including and especially Gmic.

uh oh, here is a screen cap of trying to force quit gmic because it was beach-balled for like 5 minutes. I have never had a problem with gmic in 2.6 or the first mcgimp. Not sure why it's a problem now or why it's so slow.

hate to double post...but...I decided to close gimp and restart it, and now everything seems to work ok...decent speed even in gmic. So...thumbs up for now!

I deleted McGimp and then downloaded the other one... I use an application called app zapper to delete the old...the new version picked up all of my brushes, gradients, fonts, etc etc...but if you are concerned put the old one on a dvd or a memory stick and then remove it totally...before adding the new..

2-ton,

Regarding your question about where best to put it, obviously the Application folder is the best place to put it. If you don't need 2.6, then I suggest to move 2.6 off to another location and put McGimp in there. Otherwise, I don't know enough about your workspace to provide any suggestions other than to leave it on your desktop.

Partha

I use both....2.6 has so many brushes, fonts, and scripts and plug ins that I occasionally use but don't want to clutter up mcgimp...so would it work to rename gimp.app (the 2.6 one in applications) or would that mess up the workings.

I don't know anything about the 2.6 version. Sorry 2-ton. :(

You can try to do that and see what happens?

BTW: Moving brushes, fonts, and scripts, is not a problem. If you have plug-ins, they will not work.

you mean I can make a folder of brushes from 2.6 and put the folder into mcgimp? What do you name the folder? I have always just taken individual brushes and moved them over one by one because I thought a folder of brushes inside the brushes folder would have to be pointed to in preferences in some way. Meanwhile, I like keeping my 2.6 as a backup, so I will just have to keep mcgimp on the desktop for now. I also have it on my dock, so it's easy to access.

I mean copy all of your brushes from GIMP 2.6 over to the brushes folder in MCGimp....follow the same path as you did to add them to GIMP 2.6 and you will find GIMP 2.8 and put them in the 2.8 brushes folder...same for gradients, scripts, palettes, patterns...worked for me I dont see why it wouldnt for you...I also copied some of my favorite fonts into the font folder in the same place.

I can do that! That is, when I make some time to mess around. More questions...what about plug ins? Can I copy them over to mcgimp? I was thinking I would have to have py's made especially for 2.8 and/or mcgimp. And where do I look in my mac to see if I have a 32 bit or 64 bit system?

py files you can put them straight into your local plug-in folder ~/Library/Application Support/Gimp-2.8/plug-ins if I remember correctly.

Don't worry about 32-bit or 64-bit system. You have a 64-bit system since you are running McGimp. It does not work on a 32-bit system.

That is cool to know, Partha...I have looked all over my macbook stats and could not find out about the 64 bits anywhere!!! And yes, you remember correctly as to where the plug in folder is, lol.

just put up a picture in the 'fav flower pics' thread...happy to say that the new McGimp behaved perfectly, G'mic included. Lists were in alpha order and of course, some of the filter windows still hide but when in single window mode they always have part of them peeking out the side so it's easy to click them to the top. The alpha listings are a great improvement, kudos to Partha for fixing that.
